many people thought The Offspring were an overnight success or a novelty act. Actually, the American punk band had built up a following over the previous 15 years or so, gradually increasing sales and radio exposure during the 1990s, with songs that covered a variety of sensitive issues such as police brutality, gun violence in schools, and drug addiction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n I got into the band when I heard \u2018Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)\u2019 and saw The Offspring play it live on the BBC\u2019s chart programme, \u2018Top of the Pops\u2019. At the time I thought it was just a funny song, but on closer inspection now perhaps there was more going on in the lyrics than I had thought or even the band had intended.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The band meant \u2018Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)\u2019 as light-hearted teasing of people who try to be something they are not. The main character in the song is a young white man who dresses in what he thinks are black fashions, listens to black music, and he serves as the representative of this phenomenon. The lyrics mention that the young man \u201cisn\u2019t cool but he fakes it anyway\u201d and \u201che\u2019s trying too hard and he\u2019s not quite hip\u201d. They paint a funny picture of a bit of a loser. But for young white people who identified for whatever reason with black culture, this song was an encouragement for others to mock or even bully them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Nowadays there is also the issue of cultural appropriation. Is it acceptable for someone from a majority to adopt aspects of a minority culture? An example of this was criticism that Kim Kardashian West received for naming a new fashion range \u201cKimono\u201d. Although the clothing was not similar to the traditional Japanese clothing, the designer\u2019s use of the name without consideration for its importance in Japanese culture was criticised as cultural appropriation. The name was changed soon after.<\/span><\/p>\r\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n So is \u2018Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)\u2019 actually about cultural appropriation? The idea that is it wrong to adopt elements of a culture that are not your own \u2013 in this case, white people taking black fashion and black music with the intention of trying to make themselves seem like black people \u2013 is an issue being debated more widely around the world these days.
