Booker T. & the M.G.\u2019s \u2013 \u2018Soul Limbo\u2019 (1968)<\/p>\r\n

Motown and Stax were the most famous record labels in 1960s American soul, but each had its own way of making music. Motown was more like a production line, where a song was written by a team and then tried out with various singers or groups. Stax, on the other hand, tended to let its writers and musicians jam, or work with the stars to create songs. Both labels had a house band too: Motown\u2019s was the Funk Brothers, and at Stax it was Booker T. & the M.G.\u2019s.<\/p>\r\n
<\/p>\r\n
Booker T. & the M.G.\u2019s were an integrated band \u2013 meaning there were black and white members \u2013 which was rare in that era and location. The band\u2019s de facto leader, Booker T., was a prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalist, and his organ and piano lent the band its distinctive sounds. The band played on many hits for Stax artists, and even co-wrote some, like Otis Redding\u2019s \u2018(Sittin\u2019 on) The Dock of the Bay\u2019 (see my blog in August 2020).<\/p>\r\n
<\/p>\r\n
But Booker T. & the M.G.\u2019s weren\u2019t just a backing band. They are most famous for the hits they had in their own right, particularly the instrumental \u2018Green Onions\u2019. In the UK, however, the band is famous for another song and another reason. Since the 1970s, \u2018Soul Limbo\u2019 has been used as the theme tune for the BBC\u2019s live cricket coverage on television and radio.<\/p>\r\n
<\/p>\r\n
At first, it seems an odd combination: a southern American soul band paired with a quintessentially English sport that is incomprehensible to many. However, \u2018Soul Limbo\u2019 is a song in the calypso style, with cowbell and marimba featuring prominently. This actually makes it the ideal accompaniment to cricket coverage, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, when the West Indies were dominating the sport.<\/p>\r\n
<\/p>\r\n
For many people, listening to cricket commentary on BBC radio is not just about cricket. With cricket matches often going on for several days, listening to the commentators talk about so many things (not just cricket) is like sitting with a group of friends and having a chat while watching the game. Cricket is a summer sport, and for many people, \u2018Soul Limbo\u2019 by Booker T. & the M.G.\u2019s is the sound of cricket and the sound of summer.<\/p>\r\n
