Public Enemy \u2013 \u2018Yo! Bum Rush the Show\u2019 (1987) <\/span><\/p>\r\n

When I saw Red Hot Chili Peppers live at Earls Court in London in 2006, near the end of their set they played one of their biggest hits, \u2018Give It Away\u2019. As the intro to that song, they played about a minute of another song: \u2018You\u2019re Gonna Get Yours\u2019 by Public Enemy. Red Hot Chili Peppers have long been vocal in their appreciation of many artists from a variety of genres, including hip hop \u2013 indeed, much of their early music was heavily influenced by the genre \u2013 but hearing them segue from a hip hop song into their own rock song was an interesting experience.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2018You\u2019re Gonna Get Yours\u2019 is the opening song on Public Enemy\u2019s debut album, \u2018Yo! Bum Rush the Show\u2019. It was released on the Def Jam record label, which was set up by Rick Rubin for hip hop artists such as Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys. Rubin was a major figure in meshing rock and hip hop, leading to mainstream success in the late 1980s. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

To be honest, I\u2019ve never really been a fan of hip hop. I don\u2019t know why, but it\u2019s just never appealed to me. But listening to \u2018Yo! Bum Rush the Show\u2019 now is interesting to see how political the lyrics are, focused on various aspects of the Black experience in America. This is something that many other hip hop artists would do, thanks in part to Public Enemy\u2019s influence. Another interesting aspect of this album for me is that on first listen I thought there was a lack of musical variety designed to make the listener focus on the lyrics, but actually there is a lot of experimentation with unusual sounds and melodies going on in the background.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After gaining recognition and success through Def Jam and working with artists like Public Enemy, Rubin began a long association with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the early 1990s, which thus far has seen him produce 8 of their last 9 albums. There\u2019s another (maybe dubious, definitely tenuous) connection between Red Hot Chili Peppers and Public Enemy: the guitar riff on \u2018You\u2019re Gonna Get Yours\u2019 clearly influenced a couple of other Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, \u2018Power of Equality\u2019 from their 1991 album \u2018Blood Sugar Sex Magik\u2019 and \u2018Storm in a Teacup\u2019 from \u2018Stadium Arcadium\u2019 (2006). Rubin has gone on to work with country artists, producing several Johnny Cash albums before his death in 2003 and then helping to propel the Avett Brothers into the mainstream.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
