Chic \u2013 \u2018Risqu\u00e9\u2019 (1979)<\/p>\r\n
When you think of 1970s music, one of the genres that comes to mind is surely disco. And when you think of disco, you probably think of artists like the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, or Earth, Wind & Fire. By the end of the \u201870s, disco was huge, thanks in part to the Bee Gees\u2019 soundtrack album for the film \u2018Saturday Night Fever\u2019. Another band that were a huge part of the disco scene in the late \u201870s was Chic, and their influence on the genre can be seen through the fact that members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote, performed on, and produced hit records for numerous other artists such as Diana Ross and Sister Sledge (including \u2018Lost in Music\u2019, the theme song for my programme on FM-N1).<\/p>\r\n
By the end of the decade, and around the release of this album, the cultural backlash against disco music was reaching its peak. The \u201cdisco sucks\u201d movement had been gaining momentum for a few years and culminated in the mass destruction of disco records on the outfield at a Major League Baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Actually, there were supposed to be two games, but the demolition rendered the outfield unplayable and the second game was cancelled.<\/p>\r\n
Released two weeks after that event, this critically acclaimed album, \u2018Risqu\u00e9\u2019, features several hits, such as \u2018My Forbidden Lover\u2019 and \u2018My Feet Keep Dancing\u2019, as well as what must surely be one of the most influential songs of the 20th century: \u2018Good Times\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
Edwards\u2019 bassline for \u2018Good Times\u2019 directly influenced another incredibly famous bassline. Queen\u2019s bassist John Deacon had been spending time with Chic and their influence on him was made very clear the following year, when Queen released \u2018Another One Bites the Dust\u2019. (Incidentally, I also think Brian May\u2019s guitar near the end of that song sounds a lot like Nile Rodgers\u2019 playing style.) Blondie\u2019s 1981 single \u2018Rapture\u2019 also showed the influence of \u2018Good Times\u2019 and Chic\u2019s style in general, and the 1997 Daft Punk song \u2018Around the World\u2019 used the bassline from \u2018Good Times\u2019 too.<\/p>\r\n
Chic disbanded in the early \u201880s, with the band being negatively affected by the \u201cdisco sucks\u201d movement. In a way, though, Rodgers\u2019 and Edwards\u2019 involvement in so many other artists\u2019 work shows that Chic transcended the disco genre, and this is even more evident when we consider that just two months after the release of \u2018Good Times\u2019, it was being used to launch a brand new genre into the mainstream. But that will have to wait until next month\u2019s blog.<\/p>\r\n
