The Sugarhill Gang \u2013 \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019 (1979)<\/p>\r\n
Although the backlash against disco music reached its peak in the late 1970s, the influence of disco continued. One band in particular, Chic, proved to be hugely influential not just through the members\u2019 work with other artists, but even without their knowledge.<\/p>\r\n
Chic released the single \u2018Good Times\u2019, with its distinctive bassline, on 4th June, 1979. Two months later, another single with the exact same bassline was released. The song was called \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019, and it was by the Sugarhill Gang.<\/p>\r\n
What\u2019s interesting about \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019 is that it was not a disco song or a rock song, but a new genre: hip hop. Hip hop had grown organically on the streets of New York, as young people would gather and dance to music played on stereos. There\u2019s a story that when Chic played \u2018Good Times\u2019 at a concert in New York in 1979, members of the Sugarhill Gang entered the stage and began freestyling lyrics over the intro. Shortly afterwards, Chic member Nile Rodgers heard the same bassline on a different record at a nightclub, which turned out to be \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
This kind of appropriation is now known as sampling, and is an integral part of hip hop and rap, another genre that \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019 \u2013 and by extension, \u2018Good Times\u2019 \u2013 helped to kick start. At the time, Chic sued the Sugarhill Gang, and as a result they were named as co-writers on \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019 was not the first hip hop record, but it was the first to go mainstream. Nowadays, Chic actually incorporate lyrics from \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019 into live performances of \u2018Good Times\u2019. This is an interesting twist that shows how \u2018Good Times\u2019 influenced, and then was influenced by, \u2018Rapper\u2019s Delight\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
