\u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019 Original Soundtrack (1966)<\/p>\r\n
I studied French and Italian for my first university degree. In the second year, one of the optional Italian courses was on cinema, specifically spaghetti westerns. Spaghetti westerns were so called because they were traditional western stories set in the American Wild West but produced in Europe, often in Italy.<\/p>\r\n
One of the films we studied in detail on that course was Sergio Leone\u2019s 1968 film \u2018Once Upon a Time in the West\u2019. The soundtrack for that film was created by Ennio Morricone, who also composed the soundtrack to Leone\u2019s previous western, \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019 (1968).<\/p>\r\n
The opening piece of music \u2013 the opening few seconds, in fact \u2013 of the soundtrack to \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019 is surely one of the most recognisable in the history of cinema. It\u2019s a motif that recurs throughout the soundtrack, a melody that is said to represent a coyote\u2019s howl. Interestingly, Morricone decided to have each of the film\u2019s three main characters be represented by a different instrument: a flute, an ocarina, and human voices. Another song late in the soundtrack, \u2018The Ecstasy of Gold\u2019, which plays over the film\u2019s famous climax, features Edda Dell\u2019Orso playing with the melody vocally.<\/p>\r\n
The soundtrack to \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019 is music that would go on to become synonymous with westerns: harmonica, twanging guitar, rhythm reminiscent of galloping horses. But there are all sorts of unusual and unexpected sounds in here too, like horses, gunfire, whistling, and yodeling.<\/p>\r\n
Having already collaborated on the first two films of the \u2018Dollars Trilogy\u2019, Leone and Morricone experimented with a different way of working together this time. They composed and recorded the music before filming, and Leone played the music on set and used it to inspire his direction. This meant that Morricone\u2019s music helped shape the action on set and screen, rather than the music being a reaction to what had already been filmed, as was (and still is) so often the case.<\/p>\r\n
Those opening few seconds of the main theme to \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019 have been used so many times in so many films, TV programmes, and more besides, that they\u2019ve become more than just the theme to a single western film. For generations of people, that snippet of music now epitomises all westerns, or scenes with a cowboy appearing on the scene. It\u2019s an iconic piece of music.<\/p>\r\n
