R.E.M. \u2013 \u2018Document\u2019 (1987)<\/p>\r\n
R.E.M. formed in 1980 as a garage band with barely intelligible lyrics and split up in 2011 as one of the biggest bands in the world, with dozens of hit singles to their name. This album, \u2018Document\u2019, was their final album with IRS Records before moving to a major label, and it marks the start of their transition from indie band to international superstars, which would take place gradually over several albums.<\/p>\r\n
There are plenty of songs on \u2018Document\u2019 that are reminiscent of the band\u2019s early sound, with heavy guitars, but there are also signs of the sort of music that would move R.E.M.\u2019s career. The album\u2019s opening track, \u2018Finest Worksong\u2019, shows both, with Bill Berry\u2019s powerful drums and Mike Mills\u2019 backing vocals. Track two, \u2018Welcome to the Occupation\u2019, has the soon-to-be-familiar guitar style. \u2018The One I Love\u2019 is another example of this, and a song that was regularly played live throughout the rest of the band\u2019s career. It\u2019s not a love song though; the line \u2018a simple prop to occupy my time\u2019 suggests it\u2019s about someone using other people.<\/p>\r\n
One song in particular is extremely well known: \u2018It\u2019s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)\u2019, with its nonsensical tongue-twister verses based on a dream that singer Michael Stipe had, which contrast effectively with the simple and catchy chorus, again featuring Mike Mills\u2019 distinctive backing vocals. For me, any R.E.M. song that has prominent backing vocals by Mills is a good one.<\/p>\r\n
R.E.M. also cover several political issues in songs on \u2018Document\u2019. \u2018Exhuming McCarthy\u2019 deals with Senator Joe McCarthy\u2019s hunt for Communists in the USA during the 1950s and the band\u2019s worry that something similar would soon reoccur. \u2018Finest Worksong\u2019 seems to be about worker revolution. \u2018Welcome to the Occupation\u2019 is about the US support for right-wing dictators in El Salvador and Guatemala.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Document\u2019 is, in my opinion, a pivotal album in R.E.M.\u2019s career, as the band started to create more accessible melodic rock songs that would continue over their next few albums, \u2018Green\u2019 (1988), \u2018Out of Time\u2019 (1991) and \u2018Automatic for the People\u2019 (1992), by which time they were charting highly and gaining frequent airplay.<\/p>\r\n
