Fleetwood Mac \u2013 \u2018Tango in the Night\u2019 (1987)<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Tango in the Night\u2019 is the last album released by the \u201cclassic\u201d Fleetwood Mac line up of Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, John McVie, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham. Over their career leading up to this album, Fleetwood Mac had undergone a massive transformation from their early years as a blues group led by Peter Green into a pop-rock powerhouse. Their status in that respect was confirmed by \u2018Rumours\u2019 (1977), a huge hit on release, featuring several hit singles, which went on to become one of the biggest selling albums of all time.<\/p>\r\n
Despite its commercial success, \u2018Rumours\u2019 alienated many of the band\u2019s early fans, and they began to be dismissed by many listeners and critics as a soap opera because of the personal romantic relationships between band members. The follow ups to \u2018Rumours\u2019, \u2018Tusk\u2019 (1979) and \u2018Mirage\u2019 (1982) were more experimental and less successful, and Fleetwood Mac quietly went on the back burner, as each member went off to pursue solo projects.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Tango in the Night\u2019, then, came as something of a surprise. The members of Fleetwood Mac reconvened after a gap of several years to make this album full of huge hits that I grew up hearing on the radio (I was born the year this album was released) and which are still regularly given airplay even today: songs like \u2018Big Love\u2019, \u2018Everywhere\u2019, and \u2018Little Lies\u2019. The radio-friendliness of the songs hides the fact that there is actually a lot of experimentation on \u2018Tango in the Night\u2019, so it bears repeated listens, and the non-singles are worthy of attention alongside the hit singles.<\/p>\r\n
After this album Fleetwood Mac continued to tour with different combinations of bandmembers, including most recently with one of my favourite artists, Neil Finn, on guitar.<\/p>\r\n
Christine McVie died in November 2022, and Stevie Nicks said in an interview in late 2023 that the band probably will not tour any more. \u2018Tango in the Night\u2019 stands as a fine example of Fleetwood Mac at their very best.<\/p>\r\n
