Take That \u2013 \u2018Back for Good\u2019 (1995)<\/p>\r\n
Anyone who was in the UK in the 1990s will be familiar with Take That: a 5-member boyband who had hit after hit in the middle of the decade, before splitting in 1996, and later reforming in 2005. When I say \u201chit after hit\u201d, I\u2019m not exaggerating: from 1992 to 1996 they had 12 consecutive top 10 singles, including two runs of four number 1s.<\/p>\r\n
Their popularity among their mostly young, female fanbase was undeniable; the sort of fandom that hadn\u2019t been seen since the days of Beatlemania and wouldn\u2019t be seen again until One Direction in the early 2010s. So strong was the love from their fans that, when Take That announced they were breaking up in 1996, a helpline was set up by the government for inconsolable fans.<\/p>\r\n
Thereafter followed a period of wilderness for the four members who\u2019d stayed to the end. Gary Barlow and Mark Owen had largely unsuccessful attempts at solo careers, while Howard Donald and Jason Orange seemed to withdraw from the limelight. In contrast, Robbie Williams \u2013 who\u2019d left the band in 1995 \u2013 had a hugely successful solo career, despite the fact that it was Barlow who was the songwriting force behind a large number of Take That\u2019s hits.<\/p>\r\n
This song, \u2018Back for Good\u2019, shows Barlow\u2019s songwriting ability and I think it\u2019s fair to say it\u2019s probably Take That\u2019s finest moment. It went straight into the UK chart at number 1 on release in 1995; a release that had been brought forward due to such strong demand after they\u2019d first performed it on television. It\u2019s hard to explain what makes \u2018Back for Good\u2019 different from bog-standard boyband ballads \u2013 is it the melody, the backing vocals, the content of the lyrics itself? I really don\u2019t know (sorry!), but it\u2019s probably the only Take That song that people who don\u2019t like Take That would like.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Back for Good\u2019 is followed on this Japan-only release by four of Take That\u2019s earlier hits: \u2018Sure\u2019 (UK chart number 1), \u2018Pray\u2019 (UK chart number 1), \u2018Why Can\u2019t I Wake Up With You\u2019 (UK chart number 2), and \u2018A Million Love Songs\u2019 (UK chart number 7).<\/p>\r\n
Take That\u2019s first two singles after reforming both went to number 1 in the UK singles chart, making it 6 consecutive chart-toppers and 14 top 10 singles in a row. What\u2019s slightly strange about Take That and Robbie Williams\u2019 solo career is that although they had massive success in the UK, it never transferred to the US. But in the UK, they have repeatedly sold out arena tours as a four-piece, five-piece and three-piece group since reforming.<\/p>\r\n
Of all their \u201890s hits, \u2018Back for Good\u2019 is the one that has stood the test of time.<\/p>\r\n
