These two 12-song compilations showcase Status Quo\u2019s most commercially successful era. Volume I contains singles from 1972 to 1979, while Volume II covers 1980 to 1984.<\/p>\r\n
Although not featured here, Status Quo began as a prog rock band playing songs with long instrumental passages, and their first big hit was a psychedelic pop-rock song, \u2018Pictures of Matchstick Men\u2019. Their first and second albums were not successful at all, failing to chart, so the band changed musical direction.<\/p>\r\n
It took three more albums for Status Quo to hit their stride with their new direction, which is what you hear on these compilations: hard rock mixed with boogie woogie to create a kind of boogie rock, guitar-led, with catchy riffs and choruses that are easy to sing along to.<\/p>\r\n
When I was a little boy, my grandfather had a double cassette Status Quo compilation called \u2018Rockin\u2019 All Over the Years\u2019 (1990), which my brother and I loved to listen to when we visited. Many of the same songs are featured on \u201812 Gold Bars Volume I & II\u2019. There are so many good tunes on these albums, but if I had to pick highlights, I\u2019d go for \u2018Rockin\u2019 All Over the World\u2019, \u2018Paper Plane\u2019 and \u2018Whatever You Want\u2019 from Volume I, and \u2018What You\u2019re Proposing\u2019, \u2018Marguerita Time\u2019 and \u2018The Wanderer\u2019 from Volume II.<\/p>\r\n
Status Quo have been mocked over the years for their music, which is derided by some as repetitive and simplistic, for their appearance, as they kept their long hair and pony tails into their 60s, and their clothes, as they often wore and still wear denim. But at their peak, Status Quo churned out hit singles and hit albums, both singles and albums, and thanks to their longevity and prolificacy, in terms of top 10 singles and albums, weeks spent on the charts, and sales, they are among the most successful artists of all time.<\/p>\r\n
