Runrig \u2013 \u2018Once in a Lifetime\u2019 (1988)<\/p>\r\n
Runrig were a Scottish band formed in 1973 on the Isle of Skye, which is in the Inner Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of mainland Scotland. They were active in the studio and on tour for 45 years, before playing their final shows in 2018. This live album captures Runrig at their peak, in the midst of the release of a string of successful albums, two of which are also in the PMC (\u2018The Cutter and the Clan\u2019 from 1987 and \u2018Searchlight\u2019 from 1989).<\/p>\r\n
Like many folk bands, Runrig honed their craft by playing live and were renowned for their superb concerts, which really comes across on \u2018Once in a Lifetime\u2019. What also shines through on this record \u2013 as with all of their work \u2013 is the band\u2019s Hebridean roots, which clearly influenced so much of their music over their long career. The song \u2018Skye\u2019, an homage to their home island, is track 8, while there are also three songs with lyrics that are fully or partly in Gaelic (\u2018Ch\u00ec Mi'n Geamhradh\u2019, \u2018Cnoc Na F\u00e8ille\u2019, \u2018'S Tu Mo Leannan\/Nightfall on Marsco\u2019) which is one of the languages spoken in the Hebrides. The final song on the album is \u2018Loch Lomond\u2019, a traditional Scottish song that Runrig made their own and regularly used as the final song of their concerts.<\/p>\r\n
I actually came across Runrig via another folk band, Great Big Sea, who covered the Runrig song \u2018Pride of the Summer\u2019 on their 2004 album \u2018Something Beautiful\u2019. Great Big Sea renamed their version \u2018Beat the Drum\u2019 and changed the arrangement and lyrics enough to make it their own.<\/p>\r\n
I\u2019ve been listening to Great Big Sea for many years while Runrig are still fairly new to me, but the more I listen to Runrig, the more I can hear their influence in Great Big Sea\u2019s music and live performances. Of course, with such longevity, there are bound to be plenty more bands influenced by a band like Runrig.<\/p>\r\n
