The Equals \u2013 \u2018Baby, Come Back\u2019 (1968)<\/p>\r\n
The Equals are an integrated rock band who had a few hits in the late 1960s. They\u2019re still recording and touring now with a vastly changed line-up, but I think it\u2019s fair to say that these days they don\u2019t get much attention. However, a couple of songs on this compilation, \u2018Baby, Come Back\u2019, are still well-known.<\/p>\r\n
The Equals had 5 members, three Black and two White. Not only did they demonstrate racial diversity but they were also from three different countries: two members born in London, two from Jamaica, and one \u2013 band leader Eddy Grant \u2013 from Guyana. At the time, it was unusual to see bands with a mix of races and nationalities, but the Equals used that to their advantage to garner attention \u2013 helped by some catchy songs, too.<\/p>\r\n
The title track of this compilation was originally a B-side to the final track, \u2018Hold Me Closer\u2019, in 1966, but apparently DJs in Europe started playing \u2018Baby, Come Back\u2019 instead and it became a number 1 in some countries. When it was re-released as a proper single in the UK in 1968, it went to number 1. I know the song \u2018Baby, Come Back\u2019 from the 1994 cover by Pato Banton with Robin and Ali Campbell of UB40, which I bought on cassette and which also went to number 1. In that version, the Campbells sing the chorus and verses from the original, with Banton adding additional verses.<\/p>\r\n
The other really well-known song from this compilation is track 3, \u2018Police on My Back\u2019, which was covered by the Clash in 1980 for the album \u2018Sandinista!\u2019 and which my brother Ed had on CD boxset, \u2018Clash on Broadway\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
All of the songs in this compilation are taken from the Equals\u2019 first three albums, recorded by their original lineup. After that, members started to leave and be replaced, starting with singer, guitarist and lead songwriter Eddy Grant, who left in 1971 after a heart attack and collapsed lung. Grant wrote both \u2018Baby, Come Back\u2019 and \u2018Police on My Back\u2019. Grant would go on to have solo number 1 hits in the early 1980s with \u2018I Don\u2019t Wanna Dance\u2019 and \u2018Electric Avenue\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
