Various Artists \u2013 \u2018Wattstax: The Living Word\u2019 Original Soundtrack (1973)<\/p>\r\n
Stax and Motown were the two big names in soul music in the 1960s. \u201cWattstax: The Living Word\u201d is a live album of the Wattstax concert, which was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 20th<\/sup> August, 1972. Wattstax was held to commemorate the riots that took place in Watts, Los Angeles in 1965. Watts was a predominantly Black community, and it was Black Americans who were mostly affected by the riots. Wattstax was also filmed and released as a documentary.<\/p>\r\n The Wattstax concert ran for about five hours and featured a huge number of artists from a variety of genres who were signed to Stax. The nominal \u201cheadline\u201d act was Isaac Hayes, who I wrote about on this blog in January 2021. Hayes was a global superstar at the time thanks to his two number one albums in 1971, \u201cShaft\u201d \u2013 which featured the Grammy- and Oscar-winning song, \u201cTheme from Shaft\u201d \u2013 and \u201cBlack Moses\u201d. Hayes\u2019s superstardom, and the fact that it was his records that played a significant role in rescuing Stax from its self-inflicted financial troubles in the late 1960s.<\/p>\r\n Unfortunately, though, there were contractual complications that meant Hayes\u2019 actual performance at Wattstax is not featured on this record. A prior distribution deal with MGM for the movie \u2018Shaft\u2019 meant that two of the three songs he performed at Wattstax, \u201cTheme from Shaft\u201d and \u201cSoulsville\u201d, had to be cut from the final release: MGM had exclusive film distribution rights to all music from \u201cShaft\u201d until 1978.<\/p>\r\n Consequently, the Isaac Hayes song included on \u2018Wattstax: The Living Word\u2019 was recorded in a studio much later, and added to the end of the film release too. Hayes\u2019 original performance was not released until the film was remastered and re-released in 2003.<\/p>\r\n Hayes\u2019 \u201cAin\u2019t No Sunshine\u201d is not the only studio recording on the album. \u201cOh La Di Da\u201d by the Staple Singers and \u201cLay Your Lovin\u2019 on Me\u201d by Eddie Floyd were also recorded in a studio and had audience noise dubbed over them before inclusion on \u201cWattstax: The Living Word\u201d.<\/p>\r\n Wattstax was a commemoration of tragic events, but also a celebration of Black music, culture, and community.
