Fela Kuti \u2013 \u2018Black President\u2019 (1981) Fela Kuti was a Nigerian musician who pioneered Afrobeat with his prolific output and touring during the 1970s and 1980s. He also lived a very unusual and interesting life off the stage as an activist and thorn in the side of the political authorities of Nigeria at the time. I couldn\u2019t possibly do justice to the intricacies and complexities of Fela Kuti\u2019s recording, performing, or ideology, but in this short blog I\u2019ll introduce some pertinent episodes.<\/p>\r\n
Kuti was a saxophonist and trumpeter as well as vocalist, and spent a short time overseas in the late 1950s, mainly in London, studying and playing jazz and highlife, which originated in Ghana. Kuti also toured the USA, where he was introduced to the Black Panthers, which would later influence him politically.<\/p>\r\n
After returning to Nigeria, Kuti formed bands and created the musical genre Afrobeat, which took the jazz and highlife he was playing already and added to the mix funk, calypso, salsa, and traditional music of the Yoruba people. In the early 1970s, Kuti formed the band Africa \u201970, with whom he would record and perform for most of the decade. One of the band members was Tony Allen, who drummed and also acted as musical director.<\/p>\r\n
Another momentous thing that Kuti did after returning to Nigeria was to form his own republic \u2013 the Kalakuta Republic, which was a commune, recording studio, and where he and many people connected to his band lived. Kuti declared his republic independent from Nigeria, which was under the control of a military junta at the time.<\/p>\r\n
For a while, the authorities were happy to let Kuti be himself, as he was not causing any major problems for them. That all changed in 1977, when Kuti and Africa \u201970 released the album \u2018Zombie\u2019, the title track of which criticised the Nigerian Army and mocked the soldiers for mindlessly following orders. Because Kuti sang in Nigerian Pidgin English, his lyrics could be understood by large swathes of the population. That helped \u2018Zombie\u2019 to become hugely popular in Nigeria, and the government was enraged. In retaliation, 1,000 soldiers participated in a raid on Kuti\u2019s Kalakuta Republic, destroying the commune and all the property within in, savagely beating Kuti, and throwing his mother out of a window, causing injuries that would lead to her death.<\/p>\r\n
This episode pushed Kuti further into what outsiders would see as erratic behaviour, such as moving into a hotel with his entourage, marrying 27 women simultaneously, and setting up a political party with ambitions to run for president. Around the same time, Africa \u201970 split.<\/p>\r\n
This album, \u2018Black President\u2019, contains just three songs. Typically for Kuti, they\u2019re all long, but what\u2019s interesting about Kuti\u2019s long songs is that there was never any improvisation: according to Allen, all music was written down. Although this album was released a couple of years after Africa \u201970 and Kuti parted ways, tracks 2 and 3 of \u2018Black President\u2019 were recorded with that band before the split but had not previously been released. As the titles suggest, all three songs have political themes.<\/p>\r\n
The first two tracks, \u2018Sorrow, Tears and Blood\u2019 and \u2018Colonial Mentality\u2019, are about what Kuti thought was Nigerians\u2019 and Africans\u2019 meekness when faced with poor treatment by the authorities. In \u2018Sorrow, Tears and Blood\u2019, which was originally recorded and released in Nigeria in 1977, he specifically sings about the raid on his home earlier that year, how everybody was running in all directions to try and flee, but people died and all that was left in the end was sorrow, tears and blood. \u2018Colonial Mentality\u2019 refers to the idea that colonised people are gaslit into believing that the culture and language of their colonisers are superior to their own. The third song, \u2018I. T. T. (International Thief Thief)\u2019 is a 25-minute attack on Moshood Abiola, who was CEO of Nigeria\u2019s leading telecommunications corporation at the time, Intern(ation)al Telephone and Telegraph. Abiola was also the owner of Decca, which was Kuti\u2019s record label. This was another of Kuti\u2019s possibly self-destructive actions, as he was in a battle with Decca over what he thought was their failure to release his albums outside Nigeria.<\/p>\r\n
Musically, politically, and just generally, Fela Kuti lived a fascinating life. I recommend reading more about him and seeking out some of his records to find out more.<\/p>\r\n
