Kate Bush \u2013 \u2018Hounds of Love\u2019 (1985)<\/p>\r\n
Kate Bush is by far one of the most influential female singers in British music. That\u2019s not just because of her music, which is both memorable and unusual, but because of her character. Her first single, \u2018Wuthering Heights\u2019, reached number 1 on the UK Singles chart in 1978, which made her the first woman to have a number 1 single that she had written herself. Bush toured briefly in support of her debut album, but decided after that to focus on recording and releasing music without touring.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018The Hounds of Love\u2019 is Bush\u2019s fifth album. By this stage of her career, Bush was already well-established as an artist who would do things her own way, and that is evident on this album too.<\/p>\r\n
The first side of the album, known as \u2018Hounds of Love\u2019, features four hit singles (out of the five songs on that side!): \u2018Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)\u2019, \u2018The Big Sky\u2019, \u2018Cloudbusting\u2019, and the title track itself. (Incidentally, people of my age might be familiar with the excellent cover of \u2018The Hounds of Love\u2019 by the indie group the Futureheads from 2005.) But even among these four singles, there\u2019s an eclectic mix of musical styles and influences that you can hear \u2013 none of the songs sounds the same, and there\u2019s not really a sense of a typical \u201cKate Bush song\u201d or \u201cKate Bush style\u201d, which is refreshing even 40 years from release.<\/p>\r\n
Stylistically, \u2018Cloudbusting\u2019 hints at what\u2019s to come on side two of the album, which is seven songs in a suite known as \u2018The Ninth Wave\u2019. In these songs, Bush again uses a variety of styles, instruments, machines, and vocal techniques to tell the story of a woman drifting along on the sea at night. Bush\u2019s music and vocals lead the listener on a transformative journey that is unsettling, comforting, and memorable.<\/p>\r\n
\u2018Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)\u2019 got to number 3 on release in 1985. It was featured in the 2022 Netflix series Stranger Things, which prompted millions of viewers to stream the song, and a first-ever CD release of the single. It reached number 1 in the UK in 2022, meaning Kate Bush set a new record for the longest gap between number 1 singles: 37 years between \u2018Wuthering Heights\u2019 and \u2018Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)\u2019.<\/p>\r\n
