My knowledge of Japanese music is sketchy, but I can recognize a lot of famous singers or groups from before I came to Japan if I see them on the television. But there\u2019s one very influential Japanese rock band that I\u2019d never heard of until I read an article about them in the British newspaper, the Guardian, last year: Happy End.<\/p>\r\n
From the article, and a bit of reading on other websites, I learned that Happy End were a short-lived yet very important group in the history of Japanese music, specifically Japanese rock. That\u2019s because they were the first Japanese rock group to sing in Japanese. Previously, Japanese rock bands had sung in English, and there was doubt about whether rock songs in Japanese could sustain the genre. With their three albums, released between 1970 and 1973, Happy End put an end to what was known as the Japanese-language rock controversy, which was the debate over whether rock should be sung in English or Japanese. Happy End showed that Japanese rock had a future with Japanese lyrics.<\/p>\r\n
The PMC has two of Happy End\u2019s albums: \u2018Kazemachi Roman\u2019 (1971), which was their second album, and \u2018Happy End\u2019 (1973), their third and final album. This blog focuses on \u2018Kazemachi Roman\u2019, which is seen as their best album.<\/p>\r\n
The overall theme of the album is Tokyo, the band\u2019s home city, and the transformation it had undergone in the previous decade, especially as it prepared to host the 1964 Olympics. I read that Happy End were influenced by bands like Buffalo Springfield, and I could hear the similarity in the drums and guitar on several of the album\u2019s songs. For me, there\u2019s not one song that stands out on \u2018Kazemachi Roman\u2019; the whole album flows perfectly and nothing seems out of place.<\/p>\r\n
Having sparked the Japanese-language rock controversy with their debut album and closed it with their second, Happy End went to America to record their third album, but disbanded after becoming disillusioned with the country. Each of the members continued to contribute individually to the Japanese music industry in the following decades, and Happy End \u2013 and \u2018Kazemachi Roman\u2019 \u2013 are still regarded as vital in the history of modern Japanese music.<\/p>\r\n
