Meat Loaf \u2013 \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019 (1977)<\/p>\r\n
Meat Loaf\u2019s debut album, \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019, was released in 1977 and, 49 years later, is one of the best-selling and longest-charting albums of all time. But why?<\/p>\r\n
I think there are several aspects to it. First of all is the music itself, of course. The songs are grandiose and many of them are long but not boring. In fact, some of them, like the title track, are like several songs in one. There\u2019s a mix of genres and catchy songs. The whole album has an operatic feel to it, as if it were a rock opera like The Who\u2019s Tommy (1969). Part of the reason for that is because the songwriter \u2013 or perhaps we should call him the composer \u2013 Jim Steinman developed the songs for \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019 from a musical he had written a few years prior.<\/p>\r\n
The story that the songs tell is another reason for the album\u2019s long success. \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019 tells the story of a teenager who longs for risk and adventure while living a boring suburban life. There are high-speed motorbike crashes, romantic encounters with his girlfriend, and so much more \u2013 all in a 45-minute, 7-song album.<\/p>\r\n
Jim Steinman is named on the cover, which is very unusual. How many other rock albums can you think of where the composer is specifically named on the cover if they\u2019re not the performer? I can\u2019t think of any.<\/p>\r\n
One more thing that I think helped the album initially was a performance of the 8-minute duet \u2018Paradise by the Dashboard Light\u2019 by Meat Loaf and Karla DeVito on the British music television programme \u2018The Old Grey Whistle Test\u2019. They didn\u2019t just sing the song, but they really leant into the dramatic side of things, giving a very memorable performance that grabbed the audience\u2019s attention. You can watch it on YouTube \u2013 it\u2019s worth a look.<\/p>\r\n
Sadly, Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman fell out shortly after the release of \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019, and although they collaborated on Meat Loaf\u2019s second album, they would not work together again until the late 1980s, when they reconvened to record and release the sequel, \u2018Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell\u2019. Upon release in 1993, the album was a chart success and its opening track, \u2018I\u2019d Do Anything for Love (but I Won\u2019t Do That)\u2019, was a number one single.<\/p>\r\n
Truthfully, the original \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019 couldn\u2019t be bettered.<\/p>\r\n
