Bonnie Tyler \u2013 \u2018Faster Than the Speed of Night\u2019 (1983)<\/p>\r\n
After his collaboration with Meat Loaf gave the singer his big break with \u2018Bat out of Hell\u2019 in 1977, there was a falling out that left Jim Steinman casting around for someone else to work with. He and Meat Loaf had fallen out, but Steinman still had plenty of ideas for songs and musicals.<\/p>\r\n
At the same time, Bonnie Tyler had released four albums but was experiencing less and less commercial success and satisfaction with the music she was releasing. She was looking for a new record label and producer.<\/p>\r\n
Steinman and Tyler met and began a collaboration that would result in this album, \u2018Faster Than the Speed of Night\u2019. Steinman presented Tyler with a selection of songs to cover, choosing ones that would best show off her powerful voice. One of them is the opening track, \u2018Have You Ever Seen the Rain?\u2019, originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Steinman also gave her the song that she would become best known for: \u2018Total Eclipse of the Heart\u2019. The song was a huge hit on release and even now is incredibly popular and heard regularly on radio and television. It\u2019s also among the most-streamed songs. \u2018Total Eclipse of the Heart\u2019 would rejuvenate Tyler\u2019s career and lead to her reinvention as a singer known for belting out power ballads.<\/p>\r\n
There\u2019s some dispute about who the song was originally intended for. Meat Loaf claimed that Steinman wrote it for him but then refused him permission to record it after their falling out. Steinman said he wrote it specifically for Tyler, while Tyler has said that Steinman told her he finished it after agreeing to work with her and hearing her powerful voice.<\/p>\r\n
Since two of the people involved in the story are now dead, we\u2019ll never know what really happened. But it\u2019s interesting to imagine what an early \u201880s Meat Loaf recording of \u2018Total Eclipse of the Heart\u2019 would\u2019ve been like, just as we enjoy Tyler\u2019s iconic version.<\/p>\r\n
