I knew this song for a long time before I knew the artist, the song title, or even any of the actual lyrics. I know that sounds strange, so let me explain.<\/p>\r\n
I like football, and I support Zweigen Kanazawa, who currently play in the third division of the J.League. One of the interesting aspects of supporter culture in Japanese football is that every club creates a designated song or chant for every player, regardless of their experience or ability or how many minutes they actually play.<\/p>\r\n
Back when I started going to watch Kanazawa, we had an attacker called Masahiro Kaneko. His song was very catchy \u2013 he left the club a few years ago but every now and then I still catch myself singing his name \u2013 but I didn\u2019t recognise the tune.<\/p>\r\n
A few years ago, NHK\u2019s BS cable channel used to show compilations of live music performances from British and European programmes, ranging from the 1960s to the 1980s, early every weekday morning. I recorded them for a while and enjoyed watching artists and songs I recognised and even, in a few instances, actual performances I\u2019d seen on TV before.<\/p>\r\n
Then, one day, there was a performance of \u2018Crash\u2019 by the Primitives. I didn\u2019t know the band or the song \u2013 or so I thought. But as soon as they got to the chorus \u2013 \u201cdon\u2019t slow down you\u2019re gonna crash\u201d \u2013 my brain sang, \u201cKaneko Masahiro\u201d!<\/p>\r\n
