Split Enz\u2019s fifth album \u2013 and first big hit \u2013 \u2018True Colours\u2019, turns 40 this year. It was the New Zealand band\u2019s first number 1 album, and its success came off the back of their first number 1 single, \u2018I Got You\u2019, but just one year previously the band were unemployed and stranded in the United Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Split Enz began life in 1972 as a folk group started by university friends Tin Finn and Phil Judd. Inspired by their shared love of the Beatles, they recruited pianist Eddie Raynor and then several other musicians to join the band. In 1975 they recorded their first album, \u2018Mental Notes\u2019, as an 8-piece. They then went to the United Kingdom to record the follow up, \u2018Second Thoughts\u2019. The band toured extensively, which took its toll. Several members were fired or quit, among them founder Phil Judd. Three new members joined as the band settled on 6 members, and they would bring with them a gradual change in the band\u2019s sound. One of those new members was Tim Finn\u2019s younger brother, Neil.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In 1977 Split Enz released \u2018Dizrythmia\u2019, and when that didn\u2019t sell well, they found themselves in the UK without a record label and claiming unemployment benefits. Eventually they came into some money, booked some recording time at a studio, and made their fourth album, \u2018Frenzy\u2019. That album charted disappointingly, and the band returned to Australia, where they made what would become their breakthrough, \u2018True Colours\u2019. In the three years since he\u2019d joined Split Enz, Neil Finn had grown in confidence as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Of the 11 songs on \u2018True Colours\u2019, Neil wrote three, compared to none on the previous album. It was Neil\u2019s \u2018I Got You\u2019 that went to number one in Australia and New Zealand, launching \u2018True Colours\u2019 to do the same in the album chart.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David Tickle, the album\u2019s producer, had a significant influence in creating a tighter-sounding album with several potential hits. He helped arrange the intro to \u2018I Got You\u2019, convinced Tim and Neil to swap vocal parts on \u2018What\u2019s the Matter with You\u2019, and hid the percussion low in the mix \u2013 much to the disappointment of percussionist Noel Crombie. Five of the eleven songs were released as singles. \u2018I Got You\u2019 was such a hit that for the US release the record company swapped it with from track two to track one, trading places with \u2018Shark Attack\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It wasn\u2019t just the music that made an impression. The LP itself was the first in the world to be laser-etched with various patterns so that when light hit it, different colours and shapes would be projected onto the walls and ceiling. The record\u2019s cover art also drew attention: overall, \u2018True Colours\u2019 was released with eight different colour combinations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Split Enz released four more albums before splitting up in 1984. Tim Finn went on to have a successful solo career, while Neil Finn achieved further international success with Crowded House. Split Enz occasionally get back together for special live performances.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
