The Temptations \u2013 \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Temptations were one of Motown\u2019s highest profile groups and they enjoyed a string of successful singles and albums during the 1960s. \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019 was recorded in Detroit during 1967, a year of immense social upheaval for the city. \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019 marked the end of an era for the Temptations, as the group\u2019s line-up and musical direction changed radically after its release.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lead singer David Ruffin had developed a substance abuse problem and his erratic behaviour led to him being fired from the band in mid-1968, during the tour to support \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019. Despite \u2013 or perhaps because of \u2013 the fact that he was no longer part of the group, he continued to attend their shows to sabotage them. The Temptations had to employ extra security.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Like the majority of 1960s Motown releases, the track list of \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019 is full of love songs of various kinds. The title track, \u2018I Wish It Would Rain\u2019, is about how the song\u2019s protagonist wants to go outside but doesn\u2019t want anyone to see he has been crying. He wishes it would rain because *raindrops will hide my teardrops\u201d. That song, along with another of the album\u2019s singles, \u2018I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)\u2019, were written by Roger Penzabene. The heartache and loneliness in those songs was inspired by Penzabene\u2019s own experience: his marriage had recently broken up after his wife had an affair. Sadly, Roger Penzabene died by suicide on 31st<\/sup> December, 1967, aged just 23.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After \u2018Wish It Would Rain\u2019, producer Norman Whitfield pushed the Temptations towards psychedelic soul, which led to their iconic single, \u2018Papa Was A Rollin\u2019 Stone\u2019, a song unlike anything they had previously released.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
