Redding \u2013 \u2018(Sittin\u2019 on) The Dock of the Bay\u2019<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>On 10<sup>th<\/sup> December, 1967, the plane carrying Otis Redding and several members of his band, the Bar-Kays, crashed into a lake in Wisconsin. Redding and four members of the band died.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>Just three days earlier, Redding had recorded what would go on to become his most famous song: \u2018(Sittin\u2019 on) The Dock of the Bay\u2019. The process of writing the song took several months. It began in the summer of 1967, when Redding was staying on a houseboat in California and started jotting down ideas for lyrics. He continued to write the lyrics over the following months, and eventually passed them to Steve Cropper, the guitarist for Booker T &amp; the M.G.\u2019s, who helped finish them and write the music. Redding recorded the song in the studio twice; once on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> November and then again on 7<sup>th<\/sup> December.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2018(Sittin\u2019 on) The Dock of the Bay\u2019 was unlike anything Redding had released before, and the people around him did not think it would be a suitable release for a single. Redding, though, was enthused and confident in the song and the new style he planned to try.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In the end, Redding died before a decision could be made. \u2018(Sittin\u2019 on) The Dock of the Bay\u2019 was released as a single on 8<sup>th<\/sup> January, 1968, and went to number one \u2013 the first number one by a deceased artist in American chart history. Redding\u2019s early death strengthened the sense of melancholy in the lyrics.
