Pearl Jam \u2013 \u2018Merkin Ball\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pearl Jam came to prominence in the early 1990s, riding the wave of the grunge scene that grew out of Seattle, but by the middle of the decade \u2013 and the release of the \u2018Merkin Ball\u2019 EP \u2013 the band was struggling.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pearl Jam formed out of the remains of Mother Love Bone and Green River, and their debut album, \u2018Ten\u2019, was a big seller in 1991 and 1992. From the start, the band made it clear that they would stand up for what they believed in. the earliest example of this was at an MTV Unplugged recording, when vocalist Eddie Vedder wrote a pro-abortion slogan on his arm. Another example was when it came to promoting their second album, \u2018Vs.\u2019, the band refused to make a video for the single \u2018Black\u2019, in part as a negative reaction to the success and attention they\u2019d received. The band members\u2019 instinct to fight for their beliefs led them to even further stress: in 1994 they took action against the ticket merchant Ticketmaster for adding service charges to ticket prices for Pearl Jam concerts. By 1995, the band was boycotting Ticketmaster completely, which meant they had to find venues by themselves for the tour in support of their third album, \u2018Vitalogy\u2019. That wasn\u2019t easy, as Ticketmaster controlled the majority of venues in North America.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even before the 1995 tour had finished, Pearl Jam\u2019s members were disillusioned and weary. However, their hero Neil Young came the rescue. The band \u2013 minus Vedder, who was dealing a stalker \u2013 backed Young on \u2018Mirror Ball\u2019, an album and tour which allowed them to cut loose and have fun backing a legendary figure they\u2019d admired for so long. For contractual reasons, the name \u201cPearl Jam\u201d wasn\u2019t featured anywhere in the liner notes for \u2018Mirror Ball\u2019, and the songs written and sung by Vedder for the recording sessions were left off. Instead, the band released the songs on an accompanying EP under their own name. The \u2018Merkin Ball\u2019 EP features \u2018I Got Id\u2019, to which Young provided lead guitar, and \u2018Long Road\u2019, with Young on pump organ. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The \u2018Merkin Ball\u2019 EP songs became fan favourites at Pearl Jam\u2019s live shows, and the EP, along with Neil Young and the \u2018Mirror Ball\u2019 album, helped revitalise an ailing band that is still going strong today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
