The Four Tops were one of Motown\u2019s top 3 groups, along with The Supremes and The Temptations, during the 1960s. The group\u2019s second album featured, as ever, Levi Stubbs on lead vocals, with background vocals and music provided by the Andantes and Motown\u2019s house band the Funk Brothers respectively. The album contains 3 hit singles: \u2018I Can\u2019t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)\u2019, \u2018It\u2019s the Same Old Song\u2019, and \u2018Something About You\u2019. So far, so Motown. However, the album\u2019s legacy lies, somewhat incongruously, in the north of England.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Those 3 singles, in particular \u2018I Can\u2019t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)\u2019, set the template for what would become the cultural sensation known as Northern Soul. Northern Soul grew in the industrial towns and cities of the north of England, and to some extent Scotland too, in the 1970s and 1980s. Young men and women would travel by bus or train for hours to stay up all night dancing to obscure black American soul records in clubs like Manchester\u2019s Twisted Wheel, the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, and the Golden Torch in Tunstall. Those weren\u2019t just any obscure records, though: they had to have a certain relentless rhythm to urge the dancers on, a tempo that didn\u2019t drop so that the dancers wouldn\u2019t either.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Those who went to the all-nighters would trade records, while the DJs at the events would regularly travel to the USA to search for obscure records and would then compete among themselves to find the ones that would get the best crowd reaction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So what\u2019s the connection between the Four Tops\u2019 Second Album and Northern Soul? Well, songs like \u2018I Can\u2019t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)\u2019, \u2018Something About You\u2019, and \u2018It\u2019s the Same Old Song\u2019 can be \u2013 and often are \u2013 seen as the template for a typical Northern Soul record. The album\u2019s connection goes further: Kim Weston\u2019s version of \u2018Helpless\u2019 is regularly featured on Northern Soul compilations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Those famous clubs mentioned earlier all closed down decades ago, but Northern Soul is still bubbling away as a subculture in the UK, leaving a huge impression on its devotees. It has even spread overseas: there is a Northern Soul club in Kobe.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
