But if you look past the fashion and the aggression, a lot of punk bands sang about serious social issues. One of the more prominent, and influential, punk bands was The Clash.<\/p>\r\n <\/p>\r\n This 1979 American release of their debut album, \u2018The Clash\u2019, contains some of the band\u2019s most well-known songs, many of them offering succinct social commentary that give an insight into late 1970s British life. \u2018I\u2019m So Bored with the USA\u2019 was originally called \u2018I\u2019m So Bored with You\u2019 but gradually morphed into a criticism of growing American influence on British society \u2013 something that many Britons still complain about today, while \u2018White Riot\u2019 focused on class and race issues and \u2018London\u2019s Burning\u2019 dealt with bored youth. Also included on the album was \u2018Police & Thieves\u2019, a cover of a reggae song that the band used to play in rehearsals, which hinted at directions The Clash would pursue later in their career and showed that they were not just a typical punk band.<\/p>\r\n <\/p>\r\n The track listing on the American version of \u2018The Clash\u2019 differs from the British version, as it was released two years later, so it includes some singles and B-sides released between the 1977 British version and this one. One such single is the band\u2019s cover of \u2018I Fought the Law\u2019, which would go on to be one of their better known songs. Another is \u2018(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais\u2019, which showed The Clash\u2019s diversity and reggae influence.
