Isaac Hayes \u2013 \u2018Hot Buttered Soul\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>Isaac Hayes was a session musician for Stax Records in the early 1960s. In the early 1970s he was an Academy Award winner and arguably the biggest star in psychedelic soul. \u2018Hot Buttered Soul\u2019 was the album that catapulted Hayes from the background to the foreground.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the course of his work as one of Stax\u2019s session musicians during the early part of the 1960s, Hayes played on countless records for Stax artists, including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. After a few years at the label, Hayes graduated to writing songs with Dave Porter. Hayes and Porter wrote hits like \u2018Soul Man\u2019 and \u2018Hold On, I\u2019m Comin\u2019\u2019 for Sam & Dave.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In 1968, Stax\u2019s vice president Al Bell encouraged Hayes to record his own album, so late one night Hayes recorded several improvisations and jazz medleys with Donald Dunn and Al Jackson, Jr from Booker T. & the MGs. The album, \u2018Presenting Isaac Hayes\u2019, did not sell well and Hayes felt discouraged from pursuing a solo career. Three months later, however, Stax was in deep trouble: the record label lost control of its entire back catalogue, which included dozens of hit singles and albums, in the process of trying to become independent from Atlantic Records. Having already unexpectedly lost its biggest star, Otis Redding, in a plane crash in December 1967, Stax needed to act fast. All artists contracted to the label were ordered to record albums for release as soon as possible, which meant that Hayes had another shot at a solo career.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>The result was this album, \u2018Hot Buttered Soul\u2019, which despite being 45 minutes long contains only four songs. The album opens with \u2018Walk On By\u2019, a song written by Burt Bacharach and made famous by Dionne Warwick. Hayes and his accompanying band, the Bar-Kays, extended the three-minute pop song to 12 minutes. \u2018Walk On By\u2019 is followed by the nine-minute \u2018Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic\u2019 to close side one. Side two features \u2018One Woman\u2019 and \u2018By the Time I Get to Phoenix\u2019, another extended cover of a short pop song, this time 18 minutes long including an eight-minute monologue intro. These extended covers of pop songs would be something that Hayes would return to many times in future albums.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Hot Buttered Soul\u2019 was a massive success and prompted further albums from Hayes, such as \u2018Black Moses\u2019 in 1971. It was another release in 1971 that really turned Hayes into a household name, though: his contributions to the soundtrack to the movie \u2018Shaft\u2019 led to him receiving the Academy Award for Best Original Song for \u2018Theme from Shaft\u2019. Hayes was the first African American to win an Academy Award in a non-acting category, and the first recipient of the Award for Best Original Song to write and perform the song.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>That Academy Award capped a process that started in the Stax studios and was accelerated by the success of \u2018Hot Buttered Soul\u2019, and sealed Isaac Hayes\u2019 place in the top tier of soul music stars.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
