Neil Young \u2013 \u2018Tonight\u2019s the Night\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>Throughout his 50-something year career, Neil Young has always followed his own artistic vision and done what he wanted. There\u2019s even a phrase about him: \u201cWhat would Neil Young do?\u201d That question, though, has never been easy to answer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>This was never more evident than in the early 1970s. Young had just released \u2018Harvest\u2019, an album that built on the critical and commercial success of \u2018After the Gold Rush\u2019 and contained some of his most loved and enduring songs, like \u2018The Needle and the Damage Done\u2019, \u2018Heart of Gold\u2019, and \u2018Old Man\u2019 \u2013 the latter two even featured James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, both huge stars in their own right. The album was a massive hit and gained Young a lot of new fans, many of whom were disappointed with his follow up releases, \u2018Journey Through the Past\u2019, \u2018Time Fades Away\u2019, and \u2018On the Beach\u2019, which were nothing like the melodic country of \u2018Harvest\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>It was Young\u2019s 1975 release that was supposed to follow \u2018Harvest\u2019, but was postponed by the record company for two years.<\/span> In 1973, Young was grieving the deaths of two close friends within a few months of each other: fellow guitarist Danny Whitten, aged 29, and roadie Bruce Berry, aged 22. Both Whitten and Berry died from drug overdoses, and in his grief Young arranged a recording session and churned out many of the songs that would go on \u2018Tonight\u2019s the Night\u2019. One song on the album is from a concert: \u2018Come on Baby Let\u2019s Go Downtown\u2019, written and sung by Whitten, was recorded at the Filmore East in 1970. The rawness of the emotion in the other songs, the subject matter \u2013 many of them deal with death and despair - and the fact that they vary dramatically in their genre meant that the record company did not want to release the album immediately after \u2018Harvest\u2019.<\/p>\r\n

By the time \u2018Tonight\u2019s the Night\u2019 was released, Young himself was using a lot of drugs. This, along with his penchant for doing his own thing regardless of what others think, led to further audience alienation during the subsequent tour. The album contains two versions of the song \u2018Tonight\u2019s the Night\u2019, and Young would tease restless audience members who wanted to hear his earlier hits like \u2018Heart of Gold\u2019 and \u2018Old Man\u2019 by seeming to relent and saying, \u201chere\u2019s one you\u2019ve heard before\u201d and then playing \u2018Tonight\u2019s the Night\u2019 again, sometimes even three times in one night.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>Neil Young would overcome his drug problems and even now he continues to confound fans and critics alike by doing what he wants, which is usually not what anyone expects him to do.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
