Miles Davis \u2013 \u2018In a Silent Way\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>To be perfectly honest, I\u2019ve never been a big fan of jazz. I don\u2019t hate it, I\u2019ve just never been particularly enthusiastic about it. I\u2019ve tried listening to various styles of jazz and various famous artists, but nothing has ever really grabbed me. Or at least that was the case, until quite recently.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>Over the last few years I\u2019ve developed an interest in soul music, from the commercial soul of Motown to the more eclectic and experimental soul produced by Stax records and the obscure records that became popular on the underground Northern Soul scene in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s. This interest was inspired by the writer Stuart Cosgrove, who has written four excellent books on soul music: \u2018Young Soul Rebels\u2019 about Northern Soul, \u2018Detroit 67\u2019 about Motown, \u2018Memphis 68\u2019 about Stax, and \u2018Harlem 69\u2019, which doesn\u2019t just focus on soul but branches out from that genre to others, like rock and jazz.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It was \u2018Harlem 69\u2019 and its chapter on Miles Davis\u2019s album \u2018In a Silent Way\u2019 that led me to seek out some of his records. Of course I knew Miles Davis\u2019 name, and even knew the names of some of his albums, but had never really given them a proper listen. One that I\u2019d heard of was \u2018Kind of Blue\u2019 (1959), the album where Davis switched from bepop to modal jazz and in the process opened a new avenue of jazz as a genre.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2018In a Silent Way\u2019 is another example of Davis reinventing jazz and moving the genre in a new direction. Under the influence of his then-wife Betty Mabry, Davis embraced other genres like soul, funk, and rock, and went electric. In doing so, he set the template for jazz fusion and jazz rock, which would follow. But because of the drastic diversion from his previous work, \u2018In a Silent Way\u2019 was controversial. Many saw Mabry\u2019s influence as negative, and blamed her for Davis\u2019 decision to go electric, which they saw as heretical.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>Music is subjective, but to me Miles Davis\u2019 albums seem to be musical experimentation and exploration similar in approach to prog rock and psychedelic soul, with tempo changes and opportunities for each instrument to take centre stage in every song. \u2018In a Silent Way\u2019 consists of just two compositions, each almost 20 minutes in length. Both \u2018Shhh\/Peaceful\u2019 and \u2018In a Silent Way\/It\u2019s About That Time\u2019 contain slow sections and fast sections, loud sections and quiet sections, with a wide variety of emotions transmitted through the music. The emotion that I feel most when I listen to this album is contemplative.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span>As a jazz novice who came to Miles Davis\u2019 music through an interest in soul music, I confess I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. I\u2019d recommend \u2018In a Silent Way\u2019 as a good starting place for other newcomers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
