Human League \u2013 \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Although it would become their most famous song and biggest hit, the Human League actually never planned to release \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019. The lead singer and songwriter Phil Oakey considered it to be filler, a throwaway song, and insisted it was hidden right at the end of their 1981 album, \u2018Dare\u2019. When the band\u2019s record label wanted to follow three successful singles with one more song from the album, the band \u2013 Oakey in particular \u2013 were adamant that it wouldn\u2019t be \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019. They lost the argument, though, and ended up with an international hit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>On first listen, \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019 sounds like a fairly standard song about a failing relationship. On closer inspection, however, the lyrics reveal a darker theme, which Oakey described as \u201csexual power politics\u201d. In the first verse of \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019, Oakey\u2019s character sings of how he discovered Susan Ann Sulley\u2019s character \u201cworking as a waitress in a cocktail bar\u201d and turned her into the star she is now, threatening that if she doesn\u2019t change her mind and agree to keep working with him and seeing him, he can just as easily ruin her. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>In the second verse, it\u2019s the woman\u2019s turn to put forward her side of the story. It was true that she was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, but she believes she would have made it \u201ceither with or without\u201d the man. She goes on to sing, \u201cI think it\u2019s time I live my life on my own\u201d. The chorus is the man asking disbelievingly, \u201cdon\u2019t you want me, baby?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>When \u2018Don\u2019t You Want Me\u2019 was released, the lyrics sparked rumours that it was a true story about Sulley or the band\u2019s other young female singer, Joanne Catherall.
