Crowded House \u2013 \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After Split Enz \u2013 the band he\u2019d joined in 1977 as a teenager \u2013 broke up in 1984, Neil Finn decided to form another band. Together with drummer Paul Hester, who\u2019d joined Split Enz in 1983, and bassist Nick Seymour, who they met at a party, Finn formed Crowded House, who would go on to have the international success that mostly eluded Split Enz.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Crowded House\u2019s self-titled debut album was a gradual hit after its release in 1986, helped by the band performing impromptu gigs on the street and catchy singles such as \u2018Something So Strong\u2019 and \u2018Don\u2019t Dream It\u2019s Over\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The writing and recording of \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019, the band\u2019s follow up, was difficult. Finn suffered from writer\u2019s block, which had never been a problem in Split Enz because his older brother Tim also wrote many of the songs. In Crowded House though, Neil was the main songwriter, so there was pressure to produce. In the end, \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019 didn\u2019t achieve the same chart or critical success as its predecessor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even now, over 30 years from its release, \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019 is seen as the weakest of the original Crowded House\u2019s first four albums. As mentioned above, the debut album has catchy singles. The third album, \u2018Woodface\u2019 (1991) has Tim Finn as an official member and has the band\u2019s biggest hits. The fourth album, \u2018Together Alone\u2019 (1993), is widely regarded as the band\u2019s masterpiece \u2013 it\u2019s my favourite too. In comparison, \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019 doesn\u2019t seem to offer much. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On closer listen, however, you will find 10 songs that might not grab you as immediately as those on their other albums, but will stay with you long after you listen. From the distinctive keyboard intro of album opener \u2018I Feel Possessed\u2019, with Tim Finn\u2019s ethereal backing vocals, to the melancholy final track \u2018Better Be Home Soon\u2019, with the brooding \u2018Into Temptation\u2019, the powerful and urgent \u2018When You Come\u2019, and the surging \u2018In The Lowlands\u2019 among others in between, this short album has plenty to offer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This album also has a Japan connection. Crowded House's only tour of Japan was in 1988 to support \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019, and they also filmed the video for \u2018When You Come\u2019 in Japan. There is a 10-minute documentary about their Japan tour available on YouTube (search for \u201cCrowded House Japan 1988 documentary\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Several of the songs on \u2018Temple of Low Men\u2019 became fan favourites that Neil Finn still plays regularly to this day, like \u2018When You Come\u2019 and \u2018Better Be Home Soon\u2019. When Paul Hester was in Crowded House, he used to come to the front of the stage and stand at a smaller drum kit for \u2018Sister Madly\u2019, which audiences loved.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Crowded House split up in 1996, saying farewell with a free concert in front of the Sydney Opera House. The band reformed with a new line up in 2006 after the sad death of Paul Hester. They released two albums, then had another break, but reformed in 2020 and are planning to tour and release a new album in 2021 with another new line up: mainstays Neil Finn and Nick Seymour joined by long-time collaborator Mitchell Froom, and Finn\u2019s sons, Liam and Elroy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
