Cash \u2013 \u2018At Folsom Prison and San Quentin\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>By the late 1960s, Johnny Cash\u2019s career was stalling. The early hits he\u2019d had on Sun Records in the mid-1950s were a distant memory and he\u2019d struggled for commercial success. On top of that, he had been suffering with drug problems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>This double live album shows Cash\u2019s return to the top of the charts, with blistering performances of his early hits. What really makes the album stand out are the recording locations: two state prisons in California.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>Cash actually played two shows at Folsom Prison on 13<sup>th<\/sup> January, 1968, at 9:40 AM and 12:40 PM. The setlists for the two shows were mostly the same, with a heavy prison theme running through many songs. Apart from opening song \u2018Folsom Prison Blues\u2019, of course, the most obvious is \u201825 Minutes to Go\u2019 by Shel Silverstein. \u201825 Minutes to Go\u2019 is a comic song whose narrator is counting down the time until he is hanged: it is a literal example of what is known in English as gallows humour.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>The second record is the show at San Quentin on 24<sup>th<\/sup> February, 1969. Although it is not as iconic as the Folsom Prison shows, San Quentin does have one particularly notable song: \u2018A Boy Named Sue\u2019, another comic song by Shel Silverstein about a young man who searches for his father in order to get revenge for giving him a name usually given to girls. Cash barely knew the song when he played it at San Quentin, and his band had to improvise, but the audience loved it and \u2018A Boy Named Sue\u2019 was a big hit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>The success of \u2018At Folsom Prison and San Quentin\u2019 gave Johnny Cash\u2019s career a much-needed boost. Cash had previously performed at prisons, and had long been interested in performing at more. Furthermore, one of his biggest early hits was \u2018Folsom Prison Blues\u2019, which was popular with prisoners in the USA.
