Oasis \u2013 \u2018Be Here Now\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

By early 1997, Oasis were flying high and regularly setting new records. \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 (1994) was the fastest selling debut album in the United Kingdom (until Arctic Monkeys released \u2018Whatever People Say I Am, That\u2019s What I\u2019m Not\u2019 in 2006). Oasis\u2019 second album, \u2018(What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory?\u2019 (1995), was an international success, and is still the 5th<\/sup> best-selling album of all time in the UK. That album\u2019s success was helped by the media-manufactured \u201cBattle of Britpop\u201d, when Oasis released \u2018Roll With It\u2019 at the same time as Blur released \u2018Country House\u2019. Although Blur beat them to number one in the singles chart, Oasis fared better in the album chart. Oasis also played two concerts at Knebworth in 1996, to huge crowds: in fact, 2.5 million people applied for tickets, which is still a record.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The success of their first two albums, the sensationalised media coverage of the band members\u2019 personal lives, the fighting between them, and their often outrageous behaviour went to their heads. This culminated in their third album, \u2018Be Here Now\u2019, which was a big seller in its first week of release \u2013 the biggest first-week seller in British music history at the time. It failed to continue its superb start, though. Sales dropped off rapidly, even though the album was given almost universally positive reviews. It\u2019s strange to think, then, that \u2018Be Here Now\u2019 is now seen as a bloated mess of an album, where it\u2019s clear the band (and those around them) believed their own hype and had been overindulging in drink and drugs. The album also suffered from its lack of a radio-friendly single. \u2018Definitely Maybe\u2019 had \u2018Live Forever\u2019 and \u2018Cigarettes & Alcohol\u2019. \u2018(What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory?\u2019 had \u2018Roll With It\u2019, \u2018Wonderwall\u2019 and \u2018Don\u2019t Look Back In Anger\u2019. All those songs are still heard quite regularly on the radio around the world. In contrast, it is very rare to hear any songs from \u2018Be Here Now\u2019 on the radio these days.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I have a bit of personal history with \u2018Be Here Now\u2019. I grew up in Britain in the 1990s, so Britpop was a huge part of my life. \u2018(What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory?\u2019 was the first album I bought on CD, with money I had received for my birthday. My brother Ed and I took the \u201cBattle of Britpop\u201d fairly seriously, in the way siblings do just to wind each other up: he liked Blur, while I preferred Oasis (actually I liked both; I don\u2019t think Ed has ever really taken to Oasis though). I also bought \u2018Be Here Now\u2019 on cassette when it was released, and after loving \u2018(What\u2019s the Story) Morning Glory?\u2019 I was massively disappointed. There were some good singalong moments, but all the songs seemed to go on for so long that I just ended up feeling bored. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I listened to \u2018Be Here Now\u2019 again recently, possibly for the first time in over 20 years. The previous criticisms still hold true: several songs are too long and repetitive. There are some redeeming moments though: \u2018D\u2019You Know What I Mean?\u2019 is an ambitious opening track, and there is a run of decent songs in the middle of the album (\u2018Stand By Me\u2019, \u2018I Hope, I Think, I Know\u2019, \u2018The Girl in the Dirty Shirt\u2019). I can\u2019t make my mind up about \u2018All Around the World\u2019, which is 10 minutes long, has a huge orchestra and three key changes late in the song. It is either a laudable attempt at pushing the band to its limits or self-indulgent and overlong. To me, that song epitomises the main problem with \u2018Be Here Now\u2019: I think the album just needed a stronger producer to rein in the excess.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2018Be Here Now\u2019 gives a fascinating insight into the later part of the Britpop era and into the career of one of Britain\u2019s most famous bands.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
