Kraftwerk \u2013 \u2018Computer World\u2019 (1981)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Until recently, I didn\u2019t know much about Kraftwerk: I knew they were German, I knew they made electronic music, and I knew they had been cited as influences by many other artists, but I only knew one song. \u2018The Model\u2019, was a big hit in the UK when re-released in 1982 and was occasionally played on TV channels like VH1 Classic that were dedicated to showing music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I listened to most of Kraftwerk\u2019s back catalogue and I found so many interesting ideas. There are concept albums, but instead of them being concept albums about abstract ideas or fantasy worlds as is often the case with prog rock or rock bands, Kraftwerk\u2019s concept albums tend to focus more on everyday life: for example, \u2018Autobahn\u2019 (1974), which is about travelling on the German motorway system; \u2018Radio Activity\u2019 (1975), about radioactivity and radio communication; \u2018Trans Europe Express\u2019 (1977), which is about the idea of Europe, expressed through the metaphor of the cross-continental railway. (All of these albums are available in the PMC, by the way.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Another thing about Kraftwerk\u2019s music that stood out for me is that on those earlier albums, it\u2019s the instruments that convey the concept, not the lyrics. There are very few vocals on Kraftwerk\u2019s early albums, so the feeling of being in a car on the motorway, or on a train, or in a nuclear facility is created by the music itself, not the words.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2018Computer World is about the increasing prevalence of computers in society. The songs on this album have more vocals than previous albums, but not those vocals are not really sung: they tend to be spoken. Kraftwerk on \u2018Computer World\u2019 sound to me like a more polished act that is more confident in what it is doing and what it wants to do. The band\u2019s use of electronic instruments work perfectly to convey the theme of the album. After all, what better way to immerse the listener in a world surrounded by computers than to use electronics? There are plenty of catchy melodies here too, and there\u2019s enough happening musically in each song to make this album worth repeated listens.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Since listening to Kraftwerk, I can hear and see their influence on several of the other artists I\u2019m more familiar with. Of course there is an obvious influence on the other synth-pop bands of the 1980s like the Human League, Soft Cell, and Depeche Mode, to name just a few. Another obvious one is Coldplay\u2019s use of the melody from \u2018Computer Love\u2019 in their song \u2018Talk\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But I have also noticed the influence of Kraftwerk\u2019s aural and visual style on artists from other genres, even several decades after most of their albums were released. For example, the use of synthesisers and drum machines and the overall atmosphere of John Frusciante\u2019s solo albums; the albums David Bowie recorded in Berlin in the 1970s (\u2018Low\u2019, \u201cHeroes\u201d, and \u2018Lodger\u2019); the albums that U2 made in the 1990s (\u2018Achtung Baby\u2019, \u2018Zooropa\u2019, and \u2018Pop\u2019); Daft Punk\u2019s insistence on obscuring their identities and secluding themselves from media attention. I remember seeing the Japanese band Sakanaction\u2019s first appearance on the NHK New Year\u2019s Eve concert show (\u2018Kouhaku Uta Gassen\u2019) in 2013 and being struck by them starting and ending the song by standing behind their laptops, wearing matching suits. I now realise that this, like so much else, was the influence of Kraftwerk.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
