Housemartins \u2013 \u2018Caravan of Love\u2019 (1986)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>Kingston Upon Hull (more commonly known as Hull) is a city that was built on the fishing trade. Since the fishing trade declined, social conditions in Hull worsened, particularly unemployment and education.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>Consequently, Hull is often mocked and looked down on by other people in the UK, but it has a long history of producing people who refuse to do things just because others do them; people with pride in their city and their heritage. People like William Wilberforce, a politician who worked hard to end Britain\u2019s involvement in the slave trade. People like Lillian Bilocca, who fought the government for safer working conditions for men who worked on trawlers. And people like Paul Heaton, the singer and songwriter who has led two bands to number 1 in the UK but continued to live in Hull rather than move down to London.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>I read in the book \u2018Hit Factories\u2019 by Karl Whitney that Heaton moved to Hull after travelling around Europe looking for a place where he could live easily on a budget. He found that in Hull, and much of the Housemartins\u2019 output reflects their pride in their city and their belief that it was the equal of any other place, even London. In that era, once bands had a hit they would need to move to London to continue their careers as that was where the major record labels were based. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>The Housemartins\u2019 first big hit was \u2018Happy Hour\u2019 earlier in 1986. Despite the success, they stayed in Hull and released their first album called \u2018London 0 Hull 4\u2019. The football-style scoreline emphasised their pride in Hull.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>This song, \u2018Caravan of Love\u2019, was the band\u2019s first (and ultimately only) number 1 single. It\u2019s an acapella cover of an Isley-Jasper-Isley song. The difference between the original and the Housemartins\u2019 cover are startling: the original seems to me like a fairly standard R&amp;B\/pop song, whereas the Housemartins managed to strip it back completely and just use their voices to tremendous effect. The fact that they were able to create such a compelling vocal performance is a testament to their ability, as well as showing their versatility. It\u2019s unusual for a song that seemingly has such strong religious overtones to do so well in the charts. It was also unusual for an acapella song to get to number 1 \u2013 \u2018Caravan of Love\u2019 was actually only the second acapella number 1 in the UK ever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span>The Housemartins split after releasing their second album. Paul Heaton and drummer Dave Hemingway formed the Beautiful South, who would also achieve number 1 singles and albums.
