「SOUL LIMBO（ソウル・リンボ）」（1968年）
1960年代、アメリカのソウル音楽の世界の有名なレコード会社は二つありましたが、それぞれの作曲と収録方法は違いました。モータウンは生産ラインのように、チームは曲を作ってからいろんなアーティストがオーディションをして、一番売れそうなアーティストがシングルを出しました。スタックスはソングライターとミュージシャンは一緒にジャムをしながら曲を作りました。モータウンとスタックスは両方ともスタジオ・バンドがいました。モータウンのはファンク・ブラザース、スタックスはブッカー・T&ザ・MG'sでした。
ブッカー・T&ザ・MG'sは4人組、2人の白人と2人の黒人でした。あの時代、あの場所では珍しい事でした。バンドのリーダーはすごく才能を持っていたブッカー・Tでした。ブッカー・Tのオルガンやキーボードやピアノはバンドの音楽の要でした。ブッカー・T&ザ・MG'sはスタックスのいろんなアーティストのヒット曲を演じましたし、時々一緒に作曲もしました。例えば、オーティス・レディングの「ドック・オブ・ベイ」。（この曲については2020年8月のブログに書きました。）
ブッカー・T&ザ・MG'sはただのスタジオ・バンドではありませんでした。自分たちのヒット曲もたくさん出しました。一番有名な曲は「グリーン・オニオン」（1962年）だと思いますが、もう1曲は別の理由で有名です。「ソウル・リンボ」は1970年代からイギリスのBBC放送局のテレビとラジオでクリケットの生放送のテーマソングに使われています。
ちょっと待って。テネシー州のソウルバンドとイギリスの典型的な複雑なスポーツはちょっと変なコンビネーションですよね。でも実は、「ソウル・リンボ」はカリプソの曲です、そしてカウベルとマリンバはきれいに聞こえます。1970年代から1980年代までに世界一強いチーム、西インド諸島代表にぴったりな曲でした。
世界中の人がクリケットだけのためのラジオでクリケットの生放送を聞きます。クリケットの試合はよく数日間に及びますから、解説者は放送時間にクリケットだけのことを話せるわけではないので、いろんなことを話します。ですから、多くのリスナーは友達の会話を聞いている雰囲気になります。クリケットは夏のスポーツだ、そして多くの人たちにとって「ソウル・リンボ」は夏、そしてクリケットの曲なのです。

Booker T. & the M.G.’s – ‘Soul Limbo’ (1968)
Motown and Stax were the most famous record labels in 1960s American soul, but each had its own way of making music. Motown was more like a production line, where a song was written by a team and then tried out with various singers or groups. Stax, on the other hand, tended to let its writers and musicians jam, or work with the stars to create songs. Both labels had a house band too: Motown’s was the Funk Brothers, and at Stax it was Booker T. & the M.G.’s.
Booker T. & the M.G.’s were an integrated band – meaning there were black and white members – which was rare in that era and location. The band’s de facto leader, Booker T., was a prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalist, and his organ and piano lent the band its distinctive sounds. The band played on many hits for Stax artists, and even co-wrote some, like Otis Redding’s ‘(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay’ (see my blog in August 2020).
But Booker T. & the M.G.’s weren’t just a backing band. They are most famous for the hits they had in their own right, particularly the instrumental ‘Green Onions’. In the UK, however, the band is famous for another song and another reason. Since the 1970s, ‘Soul Limbo’ has been used as the theme tune for the BBC’s live cricket coverage on television and radio.
At first, it seems an odd combination: a southern American soul band paired with a quintessentially English sport that is incomprehensible to many. However, ‘Soul Limbo’ is a song in the calypso style, with cowbell and marimba featuring prominently. This actually makes it the ideal accompaniment to cricket coverage, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, when the West Indies were dominating the sport.
For many people, listening to cricket commentary on BBC radio is not just about cricket. With cricket matches often going on for several days, listening to the commentators talk about so many things (not just cricket) is like sitting with a group of friends and having a chat while watching the game. Cricket is a summer sport, and for many people, ‘Soul Limbo’ by Booker T. & the M.G.’s is the sound of cricket and the sound of summer.
