ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！ワッツタックス「Wattstax: The Living Word’ Original Soundtrack」

1960年代のソウル音楽の最も有名なレコードラベルはスタックスとモータウンでした。このレコード「ワッツタックス～スタックス・コンサート」は年月日に行われたコンサートのライブアルバムです。このコンサートは年にロサンゼルス・ワッツ市で起こった暴動事件の記念のためでした。ワッツの存在の方々はほとんど黒人だったので、その暴動事件で迫害されたのは黒人が多かったのです。ワッツタックスというスタックスのコンサートは録画もされて、ドキュメンタリー映画もリリースされました。
ワッツタックスは約時間でした。スタックスで契約していた様々なジャンルのアーテイストが出演しました。真打はアイザック・ヘイズでした。（年月のブログにアイザック・ヘイズについて書きました。）ワッツタックスの年前にアイザック・ヘイズは二つのナンバーワンアルバムを出して、世界の大スターになりました。そして、アカデミー賞もグラミー賞も受賞しました。アイザック・ヘイズのおかげでスタックスは危ないお金の問題を解決できました。
しかし、当時アイザック・ヘイズが作曲した「黒いジャガーのテーマ」は他のレコードラベルとの契約のせいでこのレコードにはありません。実は、ワッツタックスで演奏した曲のうちの曲はありません。レコードは年まで「黒いジャガー」の音楽の著作権を持っていたからです。
ですので、このレコードにあるアイザック・ヘイズの曲はコンサートの結構後にスタジオで収録して、映画とレコードに入れました。アイザック・ヘイズの本当の演奏はワッツタックスはようやく年にリマスターでリリースされました。
スタジオで収録した曲はアイザック・ヘイズの「エイント・ノー・サンシャイン」だけではありません。ザ・ステイプル・シンガーズの「オー・ラー・ディー・ダー」とエディー・フロイドの「レイ・ヨアー・ラヴィン・オン・ミー」もスタジオで収録したら観客の声をオーバーダビングされてからこのレコードに入れました。
ワッツタックスは悲しい事件の記念のためでしたが、アメリカの黒人の音楽、文化、そしてコミュニティの祝いでした。

Various Artists – ‘Wattstax: The Living Word’ Original Soundtrack (1973)
Stax and Motown were the two big names in soul music in the 1960s. “Wattstax: The Living Word” is a live album of the Wattstax concert, which was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 20th August, 1972. Wattstax was held to commemorate the riots that took place in Watts, Los Angeles in 1965. Watts was a predominantly Black community, and it was Black Americans who were mostly affected by the riots. Wattstax was also filmed and released as a documentary.
The Wattstax concert ran for about five hours and featured a huge number of artists from a variety of genres who were signed to Stax. The nominal “headline” act was Isaac Hayes, who I wrote about on this blog in January 2021. Hayes was a global superstar at the time thanks to his two number one albums in 1971, “Shaft” – which featured the Grammy- and Oscar-winning song, “Theme from Shaft” – and “Black Moses”. Hayes’s superstardom, and the fact that it was his records that played a significant role in rescuing Stax from its self-inflicted financial troubles in the late 1960s.
Unfortunately, though, there were contractual complications that meant Hayes’ actual performance at Wattstax is not featured on this record. A prior distribution deal with MGM for the movie ‘Shaft’ meant that two of the three songs he performed at Wattstax, “Theme from Shaft” and “Soulsville”, had to be cut from the final release: MGM had exclusive film distribution rights to all music from “Shaft” until 1978.
Consequently, the Isaac Hayes song included on ‘Wattstax: The Living Word’ was recorded in a studio much later, and added to the end of the film release too. Hayes’ original performance was not released until the film was remastered and re-released in 2003.
Hayes’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” is not the only studio recording on the album. “Oh La Di Da” by the Staple Singers and “Lay Your Lovin’ on Me” by Eddie Floyd were also recorded in a studio and had audience noise dubbed over them before inclusion on “Wattstax: The Living Word”.
Wattstax was a commemoration of tragic events, but also a celebration of Black music, culture, and community. This album is a fitting chronicle of that day.
