ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！PULP「COMMON PEOPLE」

PULP（パルプ）「COMMON PEOPLE（コモン・ピープル）」（1995年）
パルプは1990年代のイギリスのブリットポップのバンドだと思われていますが、実はブリットポップの前から結構活動していました。1995年にリリースされたアルバム「ディファレント・クラス」から全てチャートでトップ10になり、4つのシングルの1枚目は「コモン・ピープル」でした。
「コモン・ピープル」はパルプのもっとも有名な人気な曲です。歌詞はお金がない人たちみたいな生活をしたいお金持ちの人たちについてです。お金持ちの人から見ると、お金がない人たちは「コモン・ピープル」ですから、ボーカリストのジャーヴィス・コカーは「コモン・ピープルのような生活したい、コモン・ピープルがすることをしたい」を歌います。コカーは昔学生時代に出会った人の思い出を曲にしました。
当時、パルプは少しトラブルがありました。「コモン・ピープル」の次のシングル、「ソーテッド・フォー・イーズ・アンド・ウィズ」は薬物カルチャーについての曲でした。作曲者のコカーは薬物に対して良くないという意見を発言しましたが、あるイギリスの新聞はそれを無視して、曲を禁止させて欲しいといくつも記事を出しました。それでも、「ソーテッド・フォー・イーズ・アンド・ウィズ」は「コモン・ピープル」と同じチャートで2位までいきました。
1996年のブリット商のセレモニーで、マイケル・ジャクソンが演奏している途中でコカーはステージに走り出して、観客にズボンはいているままでお尻を振りました。事件後に、ジャクソンは自分がキリストのような者だと演奏しているのはとても嫌だと説明しました。
2000年代最初にパルプはだんだん活動を縮小し明らかに「解散します」とかの発表なしで音楽をリリースしないことにしました。しかし、2025年にいきなり新しいアルバムを発売し、30年ぶりにグラストンベリー・フェスティバルでヘッドライナーとして演奏しました。30年前はキャンセルしたストーン・ローゼズの代わりでした。2025年はポスターなどで「パッチワーク」というバンド名が書いてありましたが、実はそのバンドは実在しておらず、パルプのサプライズ演奏でした。
2025年のニューアルバムと演奏は大人気でした。でも僕が個人的に思うのは、「コモン・ピープル」は最高です。

Pulp – ‘Common People’ (1995)
Pulp were part of the Britpop scene of the mid-90s but had in fact been around a long time before that, and although they sang about their working-class roots, they always seemed slightly distant from the likes of Blur and Oasis. ‘Common People’ was the first of four singles from their 1995 album ‘Different Class’, all of which reached the top 10 in the UK singles chart.
‘Common People’ is Pulp’s best known and probably most popular song. It’s about “posh” people wanting to live like what they see as lower-class people, as a form of tourism, hence the lyrics in the chorus: “I want to live like common people, I want to do whatever common people do”. Singer and songwriter Jarvis Cocker wrote it about someone he knew when he was at college, but also as a reaction against what he saw as the increase in the idea of slumming in popular culture at the time.
Pulp were no strangers to controversy. The single that followed ‘Common People’, ‘Sorted for Es and Whizz’, was about casual drug culture, specifically Cocker’s opinion that it was shallow and meaningless. Ignoring the content of the song and its meaning entirely, the British newspaper the Daily Mirror objected to the song, claiming that it glorified drug use. Despite this, it also reached number 2 on the UK singles chart.
The following year, Cocker made headlines for running onstage during a performance by Michael Jackson at the Brit Awards and wiggling his bottom at the audience. Cocker explained that he was disgusted by the staging of Jackson as some sort of Christ-like figure.
Pulp gradually disappeared from view and stopped releasing new music without any real fanfare or announcement that they were splitting up. They surprised everyone with a new album in 2025. They also headlined the Pyramid stage at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival for first time in 30 years. Their first appearance as headliners was as a short-notice stand-in for the Stone Roses; the second was a “secret” appearance billed as being an artist called Patchwork, which doesn’t exist.
The new album and headline performance were met with critical and popular acclaim. But whatever Pulp do, they will surely never top ‘Common People’.
