ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！THE VERVE「BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY」

THE VERVE（ザ・ヴァーヴ）　「BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY（ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー）」　（1997年）

「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はザ・ヴァーヴの最も有名な曲です。1997年7月リリースされて、英国チャートで2位になりました。今でもよく聞きます。

「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」は長く人気がある理由の一つはバイオリンのメロディです。しかしこのメロディはザ・ヴァーヴにとって残念がことがありました。ローリングストーンズの曲、「ラスト・タイム」からのサンプルでした。ザ・ヴァーヴのレコード会社はローリングストーンズのレコード会社からサンプルを使う許可を得ましたが、ローリングストーンズの元マネージャー アレン・クラインは使用できないと言いました。その結果、「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はザ・ヴァーヴのリチャード・アシュクロフトが作曲ではなく、ミック・ジャガーとキース・リチャーズが作曲になりました。それで、ジャガーとリチャーズは全てのロイヤリティをもらって、アシュクロフトはただ千ドルをもらっただけでした。

チャートで2位まで上がって、そして1997年から2019年までよくラジオやテレビやCMで使われている「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」はジャガーとリチャーズに約5百万ドルの価値があると言われていました。アレン・クラインは2009年に亡くなって、2019年にアシュクロフトはクラインの息子さんと連絡を取りました。その二人はジャガーとリチャーズとも連絡を取って、やっとアシュクロフトに「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」のロイヤリティをアシュクロフトに入るよう契約をしました。

これでとても長い作曲の喧嘩が終わりました。

The Verve – ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ (1997)

‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ is the Verve’s best known song. Released in June 1997, it went to number 2 on the UK singles chart and helped the success of the album it came from, ‘Urban Hymns’.

The reason for the song’s success and lasting popularity is probably the distinctive violin melody. Unfortunately for the Verve, and especially songwriter Richard Ashcroft, that violin melody was a sample from a 1965 Rolling Stones song, ‘The Last Time’. The Verve’s record label gained permission to use the sample from the Rolling Stones’ label, but not from their manager, Allen Klein, who refused. This meant that ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ was credited as being written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and 100% of the royalties from the song went to them – none to Ashcroft, who received a token $1,000.

Bearing in mind the song’s chart success, radio airplay, use on television and in advertising, by 2019 ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ was estimated to have earned approximately $5 million. Allen Klein died in 2009, and Ashcroft initiated contact with his son in 2019. After negotiations which also involved Jagger and Richards, the Rolling Stones members agreed to transfer the songwriting credit and royalties to Ashcroft.

This ended the long-running dispute over an incredibly catchy sample in a hugely successful song.
