ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！MEAT LOAF「BAT OUT OF HELL」

MEAT LOAF（ミート・ローフ）　「BAT OUT OF HELL（地獄のロック・ライダー）」（1977年）

ミート・ローフのデビューアルバム、1977年にリリースされた「地獄のロック・ライダー」は49年後の今でも売れています。歴史的にもっとも売れている、もっともチャートに入っているアルバムの一つです。なぜだろう。

いくつの理由があるだと思います。もちろん一つは音楽です。「地獄のロック・ライダー」の曲は長いですがつまらないわけではなく、ずっと面白いです。色んなジャンルもある、キャッチーな曲ばっかりです。僕は思うのは、ザ・フーのようなロックオペラみたいなアルバムです。作曲者のジムー・スタインマンは数年前書いたミュージカルで作った曲を使って「地獄のロック・ライダー」の曲を作りましたからだと思います。

「地獄のロック・ライダー」の曲はオペラやミュージカルみたいに物語を語ります。タイトル・トラックはバイクを乗ってつまらない町で冒険を探している若者の話から始まり、バイクの高速事故、彼女とのラブラブ、などなどあります。それで7曲、45分のアルバムです。

レコードの表紙にジム・スタインマンの名前が書いてあります。僕はパフォーマーではない人の名前を表紙で書いてある他のロックアルバムを思い付かない。珍しい事です。

「地獄のロック・ライダー」がリリースされたときにイギリスの有名な音楽番組でミート・ローフとカーラ・デヴィートが「ロックン・ロール・パラダイス」を演奏しました。8分間の曲をただ歌うではなく、ドラマチックな印象的な演奏をしました。YouTubeで見ることができますので、是非検索してみてください。

残念ながら、ミート・ローフとジム・スタインマンは「地獄のロック・ライダー」の後に喧嘩をしてしまって、1980年後半まで一緒に働くことはできませんでした。しかし、なかのりができたら、「地獄のロック・ライダー」の続きのアルバムが収録しました。「地獄のロック・ライダーII〜地獄への帰還」は1993年に出して、結構売れました。そして、最初のシングル、「愛にすべてを捧ぐ」は世界中に大ヒットでした。

でもね、「地獄のロック・ライダー」の方がいいです。

Meat Loaf – ‘Bat out of Hell’ (1977)

Meat Loaf’s debut album, ‘Bat out of Hell’, was released in 1977 and, 49 years later, is one of the best-selling and longest-charting albums of all time. But why?

I think there are several aspects to it. First of all is the music itself, of course. The songs are grandiose and many of them are long but not boring. In fact, some of them, like the title track, are like several songs in one. There’s a mix of genres and catchy songs. The whole album has an operatic feel to it, as if it were a rock opera like The Who’s Tommy (1969). Part of the reason for that is because the songwriter – or perhaps we should call him the composer – Jim Steinman developed the songs for ‘Bat out of Hell’ from a musical he had written a few years prior.

The story that the songs tell is another reason for the album’s long success. ‘Bat out of Hell’ tells the story of a teenager who longs for risk and adventure while living a boring suburban life. There are high-speed motorbike crashes, romantic encounters with his girlfriend, and so much more – all in a 45-minute, 7-song album.

Jim Steinman is named on the cover, which is very unusual. How many other rock albums can you think of where the composer is specifically named on the cover if they’re not the performer? I can’t think of any.

One more thing that I think helped the album initially was a performance of the 8-minute duet ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ by Meat Loaf and Karla DeVito on the British music television programme ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’. They didn’t just sing the song, but they really leant into the dramatic side of things, giving a very memorable performance that grabbed the audience’s attention. Sadly, Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman fell out shortly after the release of ‘Bat out of Hell’, and although they collaborated on Meat Loaf’s second album, they would not work together again until the late 1980s, when they reconvened to record and release the sequel, ‘Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell’. Upon release in 1993, the album was a chart success and its opening track, ‘I’d Do Anything for Love (but I Won’t Do That)’, was a number one single.

Truthfully, the original ‘Bat out of Hell’ couldn’t be bettered.
