Split Enz（スプリット・エンズ）「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」（1980年）
発売から40周年、スプリット・エンズの5thアルバム
「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」は大ヒットしましたが、
実はヒットするまでの道は長いものでした。
スプリット・エンズは1972年、ニュー・ジーランドで結成されました。
大学時代の友達同士、ティム・フィンとフィル・ジャッドが
二人とも大好きだったビートルズに影響を受けてバンドを始めたことがきっかけでした。
1975年のファースト・アルバム「メンタル・ノーツ」は8人組となり制作しました。
「メンタル・ノーツ」と1976年にイギリスで録音されたセカンド・アルバム
「セカンド・ソーツ」はアート・ロックかプログレッシブ・ロックという
ジャンルになります。1977年にフィル・ジャッドが脱退すると、
メンバーを入れ替え、6人組として活動していきます。
その中の一人がティム・フィンの弟ニール・フィンでした。
メンバーが変わってからは、バンドのジャンルがだんだんアート・ロックから
ポップスやニューウェイヴに変わっていきます。
アルバム、1977年の「ディスリズミア」と1979年の「フレンジー」はあまり売れず、
スプリット・エンズはオーストラリアに戻りました。
ニール・フィンはスプリット・エンズに加入後、
ソングライターとしての自信を次第に大きくし、
1979年12月にリリースしたシングル、ニールが作った曲「アイ・ゴット・ユー」は
オーストラリアとニュージー・ランドでナンバーワンを獲得。
そのシングルの影響で、アルバムも両方の国でナンバーワンになりました。
この「アイ・ゴット・ユー」は
5thアルバム「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」のプロデューサー、
デイヴィッド・ティクルに大きな影響をあたえました。
「アイ・ゴット・ユー」のイントロをアレンジし、
ティムとニールの「ワッツ・ザ・マッター・ウィズ・ユー」のヴォーカルを入れ替えたり、
パーカッションを静かにミックスするなどしました。
パーカッションのノエル・クロンビーは、納得いかず怒りをぶつけることもありましたが、ただ仕上がると「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」は
ヒット要素満載のアルバムになりました。
そして楽曲だけではなく、アルバム「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」は
他にもインパクトのある点があります。
このレコードジャケットは世界で初めて光造形を使ったデザインが施されていて
光が当たると、壁や天井に色んな色や形を映し出します。
そして「TRUE COLOURS（トゥルー・カラーズ）」のジャケットには
8つのパターンのアートデザインがあります。
スプリット・エンズは1984年に解散しました。
それからティム・フィンはソロアーティストになり、
またニール・フィンはクラウデッド・ハウスを設立しました。
ただ今でもスプリット・エンズのメンバーは時々集まりライブを開催しています。

Split Enz – ‘True Colours’
Split Enz’s fifth album – and first big hit – ‘True Colours’, turns 40 this year. It was the New Zealand band’s first number 1 album, and its success came off the back of their first number 1 single, ‘I Got You’, but just one year previously the band were unemployed and stranded in the United Kingdom.
Split Enz began life in 1972 as a folk group started by university friends Tin Finn and Phil Judd. Inspired by their shared love of the Beatles, they recruited pianist Eddie Raynor and then several other musicians to join the band. In 1975 they recorded their first album, ‘Mental Notes’, as an 8-piece. They then went to the United Kingdom to record the follow up, ‘Second Thoughts’. The band toured extensively, which took its toll. Several members were fired or quit, among them founder Phil Judd. Three new members joined as the band settled on 6 members, and they would bring with them a gradual change in the band’s sound. One of those new members was Tim Finn’s younger brother, Neil.
In 1977 Split Enz released ‘Dizrythmia’, and when that didn’t sell well, they found themselves in the UK without a record label and claiming unemployment benefits. Eventually they came into some money, booked some recording time at a studio, and made their fourth album, ‘Frenzy’. That album charted disappointingly, and the band returned to Australia, where they made what would become their breakthrough, ‘True Colours’. In the three years since he’d joined Split Enz, Neil Finn had grown in confidence as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Of the 11 songs on ‘True Colours’, Neil wrote three, compared to none on the previous album. It was Neil’s ‘I Got You’ that went to number one in Australia and New Zealand, launching ‘True Colours’ to do the same in the album chart.
David Tickle, the album’s producer, had a significant influence in creating a tighter-sounding album with several potential hits. He helped arrange the intro to ‘I Got You’, convinced Tim and Neil to swap vocal parts on ‘What’s the Matter with You’, and hid the percussion low in the mix – much to the disappointment of percussionist Noel Crombie. Five of the eleven songs were released as singles. ‘I Got You’ was such a hit that for the US release the record company swapped it with from track two to track one, trading places with ‘Shark Attack’.
It wasn’t just the music that made an impression. The LP itself was the first in the world to be laser-etched with various patterns so that when light hit it, different colours and shapes would be projected onto the walls and ceiling. The record’s cover art also drew attention: overall, ‘True Colours’ was released with eight different colour combinations.
Split Enz released four more albums before splitting up in 1984. Tim Finn went on to have a successful solo career, while Neil Finn achieved further international success with Crowded House. Split Enz occasionally get back together for special live performances.
