The Temptations (テンプテーションズ) 「WISH IT WOULD RAIN（雨に願いを）」 (1968年)
1960年代にモータウンで注目されたグループの一つ、テンプテーションズは
1967年、アメリカ・デトロイト市の激動の社会の中
「WISH IT WOULD RAIN（雨に願いを）」を録音しました。
「WISH IT WOULD RAIN（雨に願いを）」はモータウンらしく
ラブ・ソングが多いアルバムですが、3曲のシングルの内、悲しい話が2曲あります。
タイトル・トラックの「雨に願いを」には、男が泣きたいけど泣いたらだめだし、
雨が降ったら泣いているのは誰も気付かないから、雨が降ってほしいとの願いが込められています。
「雨に願いを」と１曲目の「君を愛しているから」は両方とも
ソングライターのロジャー・ペンザビーンが自分の悲しい経験から作られました。
奥さんが浮気をして離婚、23歳のロジャー・ペンザビーンは
1967年12月31日にみずから命を絶ってしまいます。
「WISH IT WOULD RAIN（雨に願いを）」のリリース後に
テンプテーションズのメンバーが変更になりました。
リード・ボーカリストのデヴィッド・ラフィンは麻薬を使用していて奇行が多く、
1968年6月にグループから追放されましたが
その後のツアーで、まだテンプテーションズのライブへ参加しトラブルを起こしました。
1968年からはメンバーがよく入れ替わりました。
プロデューサーのノーマン・ウイットフィールドは
テンプテーションズにモータウンらしいラブ・ソングではなく
「サイケデリック・ソウル」という新しいジャンルの音楽を作ることを勧めました。
1971年にサイケデリック・ソウルのとても有名な曲
「パパ・ワズ・ア・ローリン・ストーン」をリリースしました。

The Temptations – ‘Wish It Would Rain’
The Temptations were one of Motown’s highest profile groups and they enjoyed a string of successful singles and albums during the 1960s. ‘Wish It Would Rain’ was recorded in Detroit during 1967, a year of immense social upheaval for the city. ‘Wish It Would Rain’ marked the end of an era for the Temptations, as the group’s line-up and musical direction changed radically after its release.
Lead singer David Ruffin had developed a substance abuse problem and his erratic behaviour led to him being fired from the band in mid-1968, during the tour to support ‘Wish It Would Rain’. Despite – or perhaps because of – the fact that he was no longer part of the group, he continued to attend their shows to sabotage them. The Temptations had to employ extra security.
Like the majority of 1960s Motown releases, the track list of ‘Wish It Would Rain’ is full of love songs of various kinds. The title track, ‘I Wish It Would Rain’, is about how the song’s protagonist wants to go outside but doesn’t want anyone to see he has been crying. He wishes it would rain because *raindrops will hide my teardrops”. That song, along with another of the album’s singles, ‘I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)’, were written by Roger Penzabene. The heartache and loneliness in those songs was inspired by Penzabene’s own experience: his marriage had recently broken up after his wife had an affair. Sadly, Roger Penzabene died by suicide on 31st December, 1967, aged just 23.
After ‘Wish It Would Rain’, producer Norman Whitfield pushed the Temptations towards psychedelic soul, which led to their iconic single, ‘Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone’, a song unlike anything they had previously released.
