「THIS ARE TWO TONE」1983年
現在、イギリスのどこに行っても、いろんな国から来た人たちや物を見たり、
聞いたりします。イギリスは大英帝国時代から多文化の国です。
20世紀にいろんな植民地からイギリスに働きに来ました。
この人たちはイギリスの文化に良い影響をたくさん与えました。
その一つは音楽です。
このレコード、「THIS ARE TWO TONE」は
2トーン・レコードのアーテイストを紹介するオムニバスです。
2トーン・レコードは1979年コヴェントリー市で
ザ・スペシャルズのジェリー・ダマーズが始めました。
2トーンのジャンルはスカとレゲエをパンクとロックに混ぜた音楽でした。
1970年代後半と1980年代前半にはちょっと珍しく、
２トーンにはたくさん他民族のバンドが在籍していました。
例えばザ・スペシャルズ、ザ・ビート、ザ・セレクターとザ・ボディスナッチャーズ。
2トーンの白黒のロゴは今でも分かりやすくて人気があります。
「THIS ARE TWO TONE」に入っているマッドネスとザ・ビートは
2トーンにシングルを1枚しかリリースしていませんでんしたが、
他のレコード・レーベルに有名なバンドになりました。
ザ・スペシャルズは2トーンから多くのシングルを出し、数曲は大ヒット曲をしました。
このレコードにザ・スペシャルズのヒット曲が4曲入っています。
「ギャングスターズ」「ルーディたちへのメッセージ」「トゥ・マッチ・トゥ・ヤング」
「ゴースト・タウン」は全てイギリスチャートのトップ10に入りました。
「トゥ・マッチ・トゥ・ヤング」は十代の出産についての曲で、
リリースしたときは問題作でした。
「ゴースト・タウン」はイギリスの全国ツアー途中で見た社会情勢と
国民の不満についての曲です。
ザ・セレクターの「セレクターのテーマ 」と「オン・マイ・レディオ」も
イギリスチャートのトップ10に入っています。
2トーンのアーテイストのライブも結構人気がありました。
1981年の映画、「DANCE CRAZE」は2トーンのコンサートツアーの
ドキュメンタリーです。この映画を見ると、
2トーンのバンドがライブする活力が分かると思います。
このレコードがリリースされた3年後に2トーン・レコードはつぶれました。
「THIS ARE TWO TONE」は2トーンのアーテイストを紹介するレコードだけではありません。「THIS ARE TWO TONE」にジャマイカ誕生のスカとレゲエ、
イギリスのパンクとロックを一緒に混ぜた音楽を聞いて、
移住者がイギリスの文化に良い影響を感じることができます。

Various – ‘This Are Two Tone’
Walk down almost any street in Britain and you will see and hear people and things from many different countries and cultures. Britain has long been a multicultural country; partly as a consequence of the colonialism of the British Empire. Throughout the 20th Century, citizens of British colonies came to Britain to work and find a better life. These immigrants have left their mark on Britain in numerous ways, but one way in particular is through music.
This compilation album showcases the artists released by 2-Tone Records during the label’s first four years. 2-Tone Records was founded in 1979 in Coventry by Jerry 「rock influence, and was also notable for the prominence of multiracial bands like the Specials, the Beat, the Selecter, and the Bodysnatchers, which was somewhat unusual at the time. The label’s black and white graphics are iconic even now.
Several of the bands featured on this record, such as Madness and the Beat, only released their debut single on 2-Tone before moving on to success elsewhere. Other bands only had short lifespans anyway, like the Bodysnatchers. The Specials, however, have always been closely associated with 2-Tone.
There are some big hits on ‘This Are Two Tone’, the most well-known of them by the Specials: ‘Gangsters’, ‘A Message to You, Rudy’, ‘Too Much Too Young’, and ‘Ghost Town’ were all top 10 hits in the UK. ‘Too Much Too Young’ was somewhat controversial on its release as it dealt with teenage pregnancy. ‘Ghost Town’ was written about poor social conditions and discontent that they band saw while on tour in Britain. ‘The Selecter’ and ‘On My Radio’ by the Selecter also reached the top 10.
2-Tone artists’ live shows were extremely popular. The 1981 concert film, ‘Dance Craze’, shows the energy that 2-Tone bands brought to the stage. Many of the artists on ‘This Are Two Tone’ perform in the film.
Two-Tone only lasted another three years after ‘This Are Two Tone’ was released. This record is not just a showcase of 2-Tone’s artists. The mix of ska and reggae from Jamaica with punk and rock from Britain found on 2-Tone Records means that this record also stands as a celebration of the influence of immigrants, particularly those from Jamaica, on British culture.
