Pearl Jam（パール・ジャム）「MERKIN BALL（マーキン・ボール）」（1995年）
パール・ジャムは1990年代前半にアメリカ・シアトルでブームになった
グランジムーブメントで人気になりました。
しかし、この「MERKIN BALL（マーキン・ボール）」EPをリリースする前の
90年代半ばは辛い時期を過ごしていました。
ペール・ジャムは最初から自分たちが正しいと思うことのために立つということを明らかにしました。
例えば、音楽のテレビ番組「MTVアンプラグド」に出演した時、ボーカリストのエディー・ヴェダーは
自分の腕に中絶に賛成のスローガンを書きました。それから、ミュージックビデオを作ることには
反対にしました。一番大変だったのはチケット販売会社のチケットマスターとの闘いでした。
チケットマスターがパール・ジャムのライブのチケットにサービス料金を付けたことで、
パール・ジャムは1994年から1995年にチケットマスターに関係のあったライブ会場を
ボイコットしました。チケットマスターは米国に多くのライブ会場を所有していたので、
他のライブ会場を見つけるのが困難になりました。
その時、ペール・ジャムのメンバーが音楽のビジネスに目覚めていたことで、
バンドメンバーが昔から褒めたたえたニール・ヤングが助かります。
パール・ジャムはニール・ヤングと一緒に「MIRROR BALL（ミラー・ボール）」のアルバムを収録しました。このアルバムとツアーは楽しく自由にプレーできましたが、
他のレコードレーベルからリリースされたことで、「パール・ジャム」というバンド名は
付いていませんでした。そして、エディー・ヴェダーが作って歌った2曲は
「MIRROR BALL（ミラー・ボール）」に入っていなかったことで、
パール・ジャムはそのアルバムと「MERKIN BALL（マーキン・ボール）」EPを出しました。
1曲目の「I GOT ID（アイ・ゴット・イド）」ではニール・ヤングがリード・ギターを担当して、
2曲目の「LONG ROAD（ロング・ロード）」ではパンプ・オルガンを弾きました。
「MERKIN BALL（マーキン・ボール）」EPの2曲はパール・ジャムのライブで大人気になりました。
そして「MERKIN BALL（マーキン・ボール）」EPと
「MIRROR BALL（ミラー・ボール）」のアルバムは苦難の中にいたバンドに新風を吹き込みました。

Pearl Jam – ‘Merkin Ball’
Pearl Jam came to prominence in the early 1990s, riding the wave of the grunge scene that grew out of Seattle, but by the middle of the decade – and the release of the ‘Merkin Ball’ EP – the band was struggling.
Pearl Jam formed out of the remains of Mother Love Bone and Green River, and their debut album, ‘Ten’, was a big seller in 1991 and 1992. From the start, the band made it clear that they would stand up for what they believed in. the earliest example of this was at an MTV Unplugged recording, when vocalist Eddie Vedder wrote a pro-abortion slogan on his arm. Another example was when it came to promoting their second album, ‘Vs.’, the band refused to make a video for the single ‘Black’, in part as a negative reaction to the success and attention they’d received. The band members’ instinct to fight for their beliefs led them to even further stress: in 1994 they took action against the ticket merchant Ticketmaster for adding service charges to ticket prices for Pearl Jam concerts. By 1995, the band was boycotting Ticketmaster completely, which meant they had to find venues by themselves for the tour in support of their third album, ‘Vitalogy’. That wasn’t easy, as Ticketmaster controlled the majority of venues in North America.
Even before the 1995 tour had finished, Pearl Jam’s members were disillusioned and weary. However, their hero Neil Young came the rescue. The band – minus Vedder, who was dealing a stalker – backed Young on ‘Mirror Ball’, an album and tour which allowed them to cut loose and have fun backing a legendary figure they’d admired for so long. For contractual reasons, the name “Pearl Jam” wasn’t featured anywhere in the liner notes for ‘Mirror Ball’, and the songs written and sung by Vedder for the recording sessions were left off. Instead, the band released the songs on an accompanying EP under their own name. The ‘Merkin Ball’ EP features ‘I Got Id’, to which Young provided lead guitar, and ‘Long Road’, with Young on pump organ.
The ‘Merkin Ball’ EP songs became fan favourites at Pearl Jam’s live shows, and the EP, along with Neil Young and the ‘Mirror Ball’ album, helped revitalise an ailing band that is still going strong today.
