ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！Four Tops「SECOND ALBUM」

Four Tops（フォー・トップス）「SECOND ALBUM（セカンド・アルバム）」(1965年)
1960年代、モータウンのトップ３のグループの一つはフォー・トップスでした。
一見、フォー・トップスの「SECOND ALBUM（セカンド・アルバム）」は
モータウンが出した一般的なレコードだと思う人が多いかもしれません。
僕もそうでしたが、実はこのアルバムは北イングランドと深い関係があります。
1970年代～1980年代、北イングランドの工業地域に
「ノーザーン・ソウル」という文化が誕生しました。
「ノーザーン・ソウル」は「北部で作ったソウル音楽」の意味ではなく
「北部で人気になったソウル音楽」の意味でした。
毎週末、イギリスの若者はバスか電車で遠くのクラブまで行き
夕方から次の日の朝までずっとソウル音楽を聞きながら踊りました。
若者たちはあまり知られていない曲も聞きたかったので
クラブのDJたちはマンチェスター市やウィガン町やブラックプール町に
よくアメリカのソウルレコードを探しに行きました。
人気のあるノーザーン・ソウルの曲は、テンポが速くて、リズムが途切れません。
これで踊っている人は音楽と一緒に速いペースで踊れるのです。
フォー・トップスの「SECOND ALBUM（セカンド・アルバム）」と
北イングランドのノーザーン・ソウルの関係は何でしょう。
このアルバムのシングル、「アイ・キャント・ヘルプ・マイセルフ」と
「ムシング・アバウト・ユー」と「セイム・オールドソング」は
ノーザーン・ソウル曲のテンプレートと考えられています。
三曲ともテンポが速く、リズムが途切れない曲です。
そしてソウル歌手のキム・ウエストンがカバーしたもう一つの曲「ヘルプレス」は
よくノーザーン・ソウルのオムニバスに入っています。
1970年代と1980年代に人気になった
北イングランドのノーザーン・ソウルのクラブは数十年前に閉店しましたが、
ノーザーン・ソウルはまだサブカルチャーとして、世界中で人気があります。
そしてイギリスだけではなく、兵庫県神戸市にノーザーン・ソウルのクラブがあります。

Four Tops – ‘Second Album’
The Four Tops were one of Motown’s top 3 groups, along with The Supremes and The Temptations, during the 1960s. The group’s second album featured, as ever, Levi Stubbs on lead vocals, with background vocals and music provided by the Andantes and Motown’s house band the Funk Brothers respectively. The album contains 3 hit singles: ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’, ‘It’s the Same Old Song’, and ‘Something About You’. So far, so Motown. However, the album’s legacy lies, somewhat incongruously, in the north of England.
Those 3 singles, in particular ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’, set the template for what would become the cultural sensation known as Northern Soul. Northern Soul grew in the industrial towns and cities of the north of England, and to some extent Scotland too, in the 1970s and 1980s. Young men and women would travel by bus or train for hours to stay up all night dancing to obscure black American soul records in clubs like Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, and the Golden Torch in Tunstall. Those weren’t just any obscure records, though: they had to have a certain relentless rhythm to urge the dancers on, a tempo that didn’t drop so that the dancers wouldn’t either.
Those who went to the all-nighters would trade records, while the DJs at the events would regularly travel to the USA to search for obscure records and would then compete among themselves to find the ones that would get the best crowd reaction.
So what’s the connection between the Four Tops’ Second Album and Northern Soul? Well, songs like ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’, ‘Something About You’, and ‘It’s the Same Old Song’ can be – and often are – seen as the template for a typical Northern Soul record. The album’s connection goes further: Kim Weston’s version of ‘Helpless’ is regularly featured on Northern Soul compilations.
Those famous clubs mentioned earlier all closed down decades ago, but Northern Soul is still bubbling away as a subculture in the UK, leaving a huge impression on its devotees. It has even spread overseas: there is a Northern Soul club in Kobe.
