1960年代当初、アイザック・ヘイズはスタックス・レコードのスタジオ・ミュージシャンでした。1970年代のはじめにはアカデミー賞の受賞者であり、サイケデリック・ソウルの最大のスターでした。「HOT BUTTERED SOUL （奇才、アイザック・ヘイズ登場）」はアイザック・ヘイズをソウル音楽の背後から前景に化されました。
スタックスでセッション・ミュージシャンの時代にオーティス・レディングやウィルソン・ピケットのアルバムにピアノとキーボードをしました。その後、デイヴィッド・ポーターと作曲のパートナーシップになって、いろんなヒット曲を作って、特にサム＆デイヴの「ソウル・マン」と「ホールド・オン」を作りました。
1968年にスタックスの販売ディレクター、アル・ベルはアイザック・ヘイズに自分のアルバムを作ることをすすめ、ある夜、アイザック・ヘイズとブッカー・T&ザ・MG'sのドナルド・ダンとアル・ジャクソンとジャズ風の即興の曲を収録しました。そのアルバム、「PRESENTING ISAAC HAYES」はあまり売れてなかったから、アイザック・ヘイズはソロアーティストとしてのキャリアをやめました。ところが、3ヶ月後、アットランティク・レコードと別れようとしていたスタックスは以前出したシングルとアルバムをすべてアットランティクに譲ってしまいました。そして、1967年12月10日、スタックすの最大のスターのオーティス・レディングは死亡しました。スタックスは何かしなければならないときでしたから、アル・ベルはスタックスのアーテイストを全員アルバムを作らされました。アイザック・ヘイズはソロアーテイストになる機会がまた来ました。
その時、アイザック・ヘイズは「HOT BUTTERED SOUL （奇才、アイザック・ヘイズ登場）」を作りました。このアルバムは45分ですけど、4曲しかありません。最初はディオンヌ・ワーウィックの名曲、「ウォーク・オン・バイ」のカバーですが、元々3分の曲を12分に長くしました。次の曲は9分の「ハイパー」です。サイド2には「ワン・ウーマン」と「恋はフェニックス」。この最後の曲も元々3分の曲でしたが、このカバーは18分間の中に9分間のモノローグがあります。以来のアルバムにもアイザック・ヘイズはポップスの名曲を長くすることが何回もしました。
「HOT BUTTERED SOUL （奇才、アイザック・ヘイズ登場）」は大ヒットでしたから、アイザック・ヘイズのソロキャリアが進んでいました。1971年に「BLACK MOSES」というアルバムをリリースしたが、同じ年にリリースされたもう1枚のアルバムのおかげでアイザック・ヘイズに大スターになりました。映画「黒いジャガー」のオリジナル・サウンドトラックのテーマ曲「黒いジャガーのテーマ」はアカデミー歌曲賞を受賞しました。

Isaac Hayes – ‘Hot Buttered Soul’
Isaac Hayes was a session musician for Stax Records in the early 1960s. In the early 1970s he was an Academy Award winner and arguably the biggest star in psychedelic soul. ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ was the album that catapulted Hayes from the background to the foreground.
In the course of his work as one of Stax’s session musicians during the early part of the 1960s, Hayes played on countless records for Stax artists, including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. After a few years at the label, Hayes graduated to writing songs with Dave Porter. Hayes and Porter wrote hits like ‘Soul Man’ and ‘Hold On, I’m Comin’’ for Sam & Dave.
In 1968, Stax’s vice president Al Bell encouraged Hayes to record his own album, so late one night Hayes recorded several improvisations and jazz medleys with Donald Dunn and Al Jackson, Jr from Booker T. & the MGs. The album, ‘Presenting Isaac Hayes’, did not sell well and Hayes felt discouraged from pursuing a solo career. Three months later, however, Stax was in deep trouble: the record label lost control of its entire back catalogue, which included dozens of hit singles and albums, in the process of trying to become independent from Atlantic Records. Having already unexpectedly lost its biggest star, Otis Redding, in a plane crash in December 1967, Stax needed to act fast. All artists contracted to the label were ordered to record albums for release as soon as possible, which meant that Hayes had another shot at a solo career.
The result was this album, ‘Hot Buttered Soul’, which despite being 45 minutes long contains only four songs. The album opens with ‘Walk On By’, a song written by Burt Bacharach and made famous by Dionne Warwick. Hayes and his accompanying band, the Bar-Kays, extended the three-minute pop song to 12 minutes. ‘Walk On By’ is followed by the nine-minute ‘Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic’ to close side one. Side two features ‘One Woman’ and ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’, another extended cover of a short pop song, this time 18 minutes long including an eight-minute monologue intro. These extended covers of pop songs would be something that Hayes would return to many times in future albums.
‘Hot Buttered Soul’ was a massive success and prompted further albums from Hayes, such as ‘Black Moses’ in 1971. It was another release in 1971 that really turned Hayes into a household name, though: his contributions to the soundtrack to the movie ‘Shaft’ led to him receiving the Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Theme from Shaft’. Hayes was the first African American to win an Academy Award in a non-acting category, and the first recipient of the Award for Best Original Song to write and perform the song.
That Academy Award capped a process that started in the Stax studios and was accelerated by the success of ‘Hot Buttered Soul’, and sealed Isaac Hayes’ place in the top tier of soul music stars.
