「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」（1975年）

 ニール・ヤングは50年間以上のキャリアにいつも自分がやりたい事をしました。だから、一つの英語のフレーズがあります：「What would Neil Young do?（ニール・ヤングはこの場合にどうするの？）」。この質問に答えるのは難しいです。

 1972年のアルバム「HARVEST（ハーヴェスト）」はニール・ヤングの一番愛されている曲をいくつも入っています。「HEART OF GOLD（孤独の旅路）」と「OLD MAN（オールド・マン）」は有名なシンガーソングライターのジェームス・テイラー（僕ではない）とリンダ・ロンシュタットでも出演しました。そのおかげで大ヒットアルバムになって、ニール・ヤングは新しいファンをたくさんできました。ですが、次のアルバムの「JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST（過去への旅路）」、「TIME FADES AWAY（時は消え去りて）」と「ON THE BEACH（渚にて）」にDISAPPONTEDした新しいファンが多かったです。なぜというと、三つとも「HARVEST（ハーヴェスト）」全然違うアルバムでした。さすがニール・ヤングです。

 

でも、実はニール・ヤングは「HARVEST（ハーヴェスト）」の後に違うアルバムを出したかったです。1973年に近い間に2人の友達が過量服用で死亡しました。29歳のギターリストのダニー・ウイッテンと22歳のローディーのブルース・ベリーがいなくった後、ニール・ヤングは急にたくさんの曲を収録しました。この新しい曲は「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」のアルバムになりました。そして、一つのライブ曲もあります。「COME ON BABY LET’S GO DOWNTOWN（カム・オン・ベイビー・レッツ・ゴー・ダウンタウン）」はダニー・ウイッテンが作って、1970年で歌って曲です。ニール・ヤングが作った他の曲のてーまはすべての死と絶望の嘆きです。そして、「HARVEST（ハーヴェスト）」みたいなカントリー音楽ではなくて、「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」のジャンルはいろいろありました。そのせいで、レコードレーベルは1973年に出したくなかったです。

 1975年に「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」はやっとリリースされたとき、ニール・ヤングは麻薬を使っていました。ニール・ヤングはいつも自分のやりたいことをやりたかったこととまやくと使っていたことを一緒にしたら、「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」のツアーに観客を浮き上がれました。このアルバムは「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」という曲を二とのバージョンがあります。ライブのとき、「HEART OF GOLD（孤独の旅路）」や「OLD MAN（オールド・マン）」やほかのヒット曲を聞きたかった観客をじらすため、ニール・ヤングは「落ち着いて、次の曲を聞いたことありますよ」って言ったら、同じライブで2回目か3回目「TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT（今宵その夜）」を歌いました。

 ニール・ヤングは麻薬をやめ、そして今でも自分がやりたい事をやって、            評者もファンも惑わされます。さすがニール・ヤングです。

Neil Young – ‘Tonight’s the Night’

 Throughout his 50-something year career, Neil Young has always followed his own artistic vision and done what he wanted. There’s even a phrase about him: “What would Neil Young do?” That question, though, has never been easy to answer.

 This was never more evident than in the early 1970s. Young had just released ‘Harvest’, an album that built on the critical and commercial success of ‘After the Gold Rush’ and contained some of his most loved and enduring songs, like ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’, ‘Heart of Gold’, and ‘Old Man’ – the latter two even featured James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, both huge stars in their own right. The album was a massive hit and gained Young a lot of new fans, many of whom were disappointed with his follow up releases, ‘Journey Through the Past’, ‘Time Fades Away’, and ‘On the Beach’, which were nothing like the melodic country of ‘Harvest’.

 It was Young’s 1975 release that was supposed to follow ‘Harvest’, but was postponed by the record company for two years. In 1973, Young was grieving the deaths of two close friends within a few months of each other: fellow guitarist Danny Whitten, aged 29, and roadie Bruce Berry, aged 22. Both Whitten and Berry died from drug overdoses, and in his grief Young arranged a recording session and churned out many of the songs that would go on ‘Tonight’s the Night’. One song on the album is from a concert: ‘Come on Baby Let’s Go Downtown’, written and sung by Whitten, was recorded at the Filmore East in 1970. The rawness of the emotion in the other songs, the subject matter – many of them deal with death and despair - and the fact that they vary dramatically in their genre meant that the record company did not want to release the album immediately after ‘Harvest’.

By the time ‘Tonight’s the Night’ was released, Young himself was using a lot of drugs. This, along with his penchant for doing his own thing regardless of what others think, led to further audience alienation during the subsequent tour. The album contains two versions of the song ‘Tonight’s the Night’, and Young would tease restless audience members who wanted to hear his earlier hits like ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘Old Man’ by seeming to relent and saying, “here’s one you’ve heard before” and then playing ‘Tonight’s the Night’ again, sometimes even three times in one night.

 Neil Young would overcome his drug problems and even now he continues to confound fans and critics alike by doing what he wants, which is usually not what anyone expects him to do.
