「DON’T YOU WANT ME（愛の残り火）」（1982年）

 

「DON’T YOU WANT ME「愛の残り火」」は世界でもヒューマン・リーグの一番有名な曲です。しかし、リリースをされる前にバンドのメンバーはこの曲が嫌いでした。アルバムの最後のトラックにし、レコード会社がリリースしないでほしいと思っていたほどです。

初めてこの曲を聞くと、普通のカップルが恋の終わりについて歌っている曲だそうですが、実は「DON’T YOU WANT ME「愛の残り火」」の歌詞のテーマは武力政治？権力政治？です。「DON’T YOU WANT ME「愛の残り火」」は男性と女性が歌います。男性はカクテルバーでウェイトレスとして働く女性をスカウトし、スターにさせます。男性は女性に「僕と一緒に働かなかったら、あなたのキャリアはおしまい」と脅かそうとします。女性はカクテルバーでウェイトレスをしていましたが、男性がいなくてもきっとスターになれたと思っています。男性とは楽しく過ごしましたが、次第に一人で自分のことをしたいと言います。曲のタイトル、「DON’T YOU WANT ME」を日本語にしたら、「僕を欲しくないの？いらないの？」と言います。

 ヒューマン・リーグは若い女性のボーカリストがいました。「DON’T YOU WANT ME「愛の残り火」」がリリースされた後、歌詞の話はヒューマン・リーグのメンバーの本当の話だと思う人が多かったらしいですが、本当の話じゃなかった。

「DON’T YOU WANT ME「愛の残り火」」は1980年代の初めてのニューウェイヴの大ヒット曲でした。この曲のおかげで他のニューウェイヴのアーテイストもヒット曲ができました。

The Human League – ‘Don’t You Want Me’

 Although it would become their most famous song and biggest hit, the Human League actually never planned to release ‘Don’t You Want Me’. The lead singer and songwriter Phil Oakey considered it to be filler, a throwaway song, and insisted it was hidden right at the end of their 1981 album, ‘Dare’. When the band’s record label wanted to follow three successful singles with one more song from the album, the band – Oakey in particular – were adamant that it wouldn’t be ‘Don’t You Want Me’. They lost the argument, though, and ended up with an international hit.

 

On first listen, ‘Don’t You Want Me’ sounds like a fairly standard song about a failing relationship. On closer inspection, however, the lyrics reveal a darker theme, which Oakey described as “sexual power politics”. In the first verse of ‘Don’t You Want Me’, Oakey’s character sings of how he discovered Susan Ann Sulley’s character “working as a waitress in a cocktail bar” and turned her into the star she is now, threatening that if she doesn’t change her mind and agree to keep working with him and seeing him, he can just as easily ruin her.

 In the second verse, it’s the woman’s turn to put forward her side of the story. It was true that she was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, but she believes she would have made it “either with or without” the man. She goes on to sing, “I think it’s time I live my life on my own”. The chorus is the man asking disbelievingly, “don’t you want me, baby?”

 When ‘Don’t You Want Me’ was released, the lyrics sparked rumours that it was a true story about Sulley or the band’s other young female singer, Joanne Catherall. It wasn’t about either of them, nor was it a true story. ‘Don’t You Want Me’ was probably the first big UK new wave hit, it opened up a path for the likes of Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, and many others to follow throughout the 1980s.
