「TO RECORD ONLY WATER FOR TEN DAYS（トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ）」(2001年)
1988年に当時18歳のジョン・フルシアンテは大好きなレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズのギタリストになりました。4年後、うつ病と麻薬中毒の影響でバンドをやめました。その後、麻薬中毒の症状でだんだん悪くなっていきました。1998年に薬物をやめられて、もう一度レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズに入りました。
「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」はレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズで作る音楽と違います。ジョン・フルシアンテのソロアルバムは実験的な音楽、そしてシンプルな収録方法が使われました。これはジョン・フルシアンテが1994年にリリースしたのファーストアルバム、「Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt」と似ています。（セカンドアルバム、1997年の「スマイル・フロム・ザ・ストリーツ・ユー・ホールド」は薬物を買うために作って、薬物をやめた後に発売を止めました。）ファーストアルバムと「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」の差はこのアルバムにエレクトロニカの影響が分かります。2009年、二度目レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズをやめて、それ以来ジョン・フルシアンテが作った音楽はほとんどロックではなくエレクトロニカでした。元からエレクトロニカが好きで、自分が出せるようになって嬉しかったでしょう。「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」のリリースからその道に歩みました。
ジョン・フルシアンテは「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」の15曲すべてを作って、そして楽器はすべて演じて、ドラム・マシンとシンセサイザーを全部プログラムし、自分の家で一人で収録しました。ジョン・フルシアンテの歌詞を読むと僕は意味がよく分からないけど、聞くとすごく奥深い気持ちになります。ソングライターとして、それは難しいだろう。
「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」のリリース後、ジョン・フルシアンテはレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズと一緒に新しいアルバムを作って、世界中に公演する長いプロセスをまた始まりました。公演していた間、、ジョン・フルシアンテが数十曲を作ったから、2004年に7つソロアルバムを出しました。一つ目のアルバムはとても素晴らしい「シャドウズ・コライド・ウィズ・ピープル 」でした。
僕と兄のエドくんは一緒に「トゥ・レコード・オンリー・ウォーター・フォー・テン・デイズ」のCDを買いました。あの時、ジョン・フルシアンテの人生について全然分からなかった。今このアルバムを聞くと、ジョン・フルシアンテの大変な1990年代を考えて、そして死にそうなところから健康な人生に戻れたことを思い出して、嬉しく感じます。
ところで、このアルバムについてもう一つの面白い事を教えます。このブログを書くとき、すごく久しぶりにアルバムを聞きました。偶然にも、エドくんも同じ日にすごく久しぶりに聞いていました。二人ともこのアルバムが大好きです。

John Frusciante – ‘To Record Only Water for Ten Days’
John Frusciante joined Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988 as an awestruck 18 year old, playing in the band he loved and replacing the guitarist he idolised. By 1992 he had quit, struggling with depression and a severe drug addiction that worsened over the following years. Frusciante was finally able to kick his habit and get healthy, and re-joined the band in 1998. This album, released in 2001, is his third solo album.
‘To Record Only Water for Ten Days’ is different to the music Frusciante was making with Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s stripped back and much more experimental, so on those respects it calls back to his first solo album, ‘Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt’ (1994). (Frusciante’s second album, released in 1997, was deleted after he recovered from drug addiction as he had made it purely for drug money.) The difference with this album, though, is that you can hear the influence of electronic music, which is a precursor to the albums Frusciante would make after leaving Red Hot Chili Peppers for the second time in 2009. (He joined the band for the third time in 2019.)
All 15 songs on this album were written by Frusciante, who also played every instrument and programmed every drum machine and synthesiser. He also recorded the album alone at home. As with a lot of Frusciante’s lyrics, when I read them written down none of them make sense to me, but when I listen I feel something deep and profound. I think only truly great songwriters can pull that trick off without coming across as twee or ridiculous. It’s all subjective though, isn’t it?
After ‘To Record Only Water for Ten Days’, Frusciante embarked on the long process of writing, recording, and touring another album with the Red Hot Chili Peppers (2002’s ‘By The Way’). While on tour, Frusciante wrote dozens of songs, which he released in 2004 as 7 albums (yes, seven!). The first was ‘Shadows Collide with People’, which seems to me like Frusciante extended what he started with ‘Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt’ in 1994 and continued with ‘To Record Only Water for Ten Days’. ‘Shadows Collide with People’ is still one of my favourite albums.
My brother Ed and I bought this album on CD together when it was new. At the time, we didn’t know much about Frusciante’s life. Now, when I listen to it, I think about the decade of extreme highs and extreme lows that Frusciante went through before making this album, and it sounds to me like a celebration of coming back to life.
Oh, one funny thing about this album: when I was writing this blog, I listened to the album for the first time in years. Coincidentally, on the same day, my brother also listened for the first time in years. We both still love it.
