イギリスにあるキングストン・アポン・ハル市（普段は「ハル」と呼ばれています）は漁業の町でしたが、漁業の衰退の影響でハル市の社会情勢はだんだん悪くなってきてしまいました。特に失業と教育には負の影響がありましたから、イギリスのほかの町のひったちはよくハル市を馬鹿にします。

 

しかし、ハル市は昔から強い人たちを育つ町だと思います。自分の出身地にほこりを持つ人たちです。そして、この人たちは他の人と同じ生き方にしません。例えば、奴隷貿易に反対して、奴隷制度廃止に運動した国会議員のウィリアム・ウィルバーフォース。例えば、トロール船の労働条件をよくするために政府と闘いていたリリアン・ビロッカ。例えば、二つのバンドでイギリスのチャートでナンバーワンをできてもロンドンに引っ越さなくてハル市で住み続けたソングライターのポール・ヒートン。

 

最近「ヒット・ファクトリーズ」という本の中でザ・ハウスマーテンズについてを読みました。ザ・ハウスマーテンズのリーダー、ポール・ヒートンは安く住める場所を探していた時にハル市に引っ越しました。引っ越してからすぐハル市に大好きになりました。1986年の夏、ザ・ハウスマーテンズは初ヒットげできましたが、ハル市に住み続けました。その時代(1980年代後半)ひっとができたバンドやアーティストは有名なレコード会社の本部にあるロンドンに引っ越す必要がよくありましたが、ザ・ハウスマーテンズは「ロンドンよりハルのほうがいい」と思っていました。ファーストアルバム「ロンドン０ハル４」のサッカー試合の結果みたいな名前でハル市への愛を感じることができます。

 

この曲、「キャラバン・オヴ・ラヴ」はイギリスのチャートでナンバーワンになりました。アイズレー・ブラザーズのカバーですが、両バージョンを聞くと全然違います。アイズレー・ブラザーズの曲はただのR&B曲（僕はそう思うですけど）が、ザ・ハウスマーテンズはアカペラのバージョンにしました。本当に上手くこえを使えない人たちはアカペラをしたら絶対分かるんですけど、ザ・ハウスマーテンズが全員こえを上手に使えます。ですけど、全員歌手というわけではありません。音楽なし、4人のこえを合わせて良いカバーをできました。

 

ザ・ハウスマーテンズはセカンド・アルバムの後に別れました。ポール・ヒートンはどんだけハル市を好きだったのか。次のバンド、ビューティフル・サウスはナンバーワンができた時、VIPだけのパーティーではなく、ハルの近所のパブで友達と一緒に飲みに行きました。

The Housemartins – ‘Caravan of Love’ (1986)

 

Kingston Upon Hull (more commonly known as Hull) is a city that was built on the fishing trade. Since the fishing trade declined, social conditions in Hull worsened, particularly unemployment and education.

 

Consequently, Hull is often mocked and looked down on by other people in the UK, but it has a long history of producing people who refuse to do things just because others do them; people with pride in their city and their heritage. People like William Wilberforce, a politician who worked hard to end Britain’s involvement in the slave trade. People like Lillian Bilocca, who fought the government for safer working conditions for men who worked on trawlers. And people like Paul Heaton, the singer and songwriter who has led two bands to number 1 in the UK but continued to live in Hull rather than move down to London.

 

I read in the book ‘Hit Factories’ by Karl Whitney that Heaton moved to Hull after travelling around Europe looking for a place where he could live easily on a budget. He found that in Hull, and much of the Housemartins’ output reflects their pride in their city and their belief that it was the equal of any other place, even London. In that era, once bands had a hit they would need to move to London to continue their careers as that was where the major record labels were based.

 

The Housemartins’ first big hit was ‘Happy Hour’ earlier in 1986. Despite the success, they stayed in Hull and released their first album called ‘London 0 Hull 4’. The football-style scoreline emphasised their pride in Hull.

 

This song, ‘Caravan of Love’, was the band’s first (and ultimately only) number 1 single. It’s an acapella cover of an Isley-Jasper-Isley song. The difference between the original and the Housemartins’ cover are startling: the original seems to me like a fairly standard R&B/pop song, whereas the Housemartins managed to strip it back completely and just use their voices to tremendous effect. The fact that they were able to create such a compelling vocal performance is a testament to their ability, as well as showing their versatility. It’s unusual for a song that seemingly has such strong religious overtones to do so well in the charts. It was also unusual for an acapella song to get to number 1 – ‘Caravan of Love’ was actually only the second acapella number 1 in the UK ever.

 

The Housemartins split after releasing their second album. Paul Heaton and drummer Dave Hemingway formed the Beautiful South, who would also achieve number 1 singles and albums. Bassist Norman Cook would go on to international success as the DJ Fatboy Slim.

 

By the way, as if to prove how much Paul Heaton loved being in Hull, he would later celebrate reaching number 1 with his next band, the Beautiful South, by going to his local pub and drinking with his friends and neighbours.
