ジェームス・テイラーのPMCでみつけた！George Harrison「CLOUD NINE」

George Harrison (ジョージ・ハリスン) 「CLOUD NINE（クラウド・ナイン）」（1987年）
ビートルズの一番若いメンバーのジョージ・ハリスンはその時代にあまり注目されませんでしたが、活動終盤にソングライターの才能が見せられるようになり、バンド外のミュージシャンとのコラボレーションが好きな人だとも分かってきました。（だから、エリック・クラプトンが「ホワイル・マイ・ギター・ジェントリー・ウィープス」でギター演奏しました。）このようなコラボレーションはジョージ・ハリスンのソロキャリアでよくみられました。
このアルバム、「クラウド・ナイン」の前にジョージ・ハリスンは音楽以外のプロジェクトに集中していたので、もうアルバムを収録しないと誰もが思っていました。でも、「クラウド・ナイン」を聞くと、ジョージ・ハリスンが音楽の楽しさをまたみつけた感じします。
このアルバムについては二つのことに注目したいです。一つ目は「クラウド・ナイン」でコラボレーションするミュージシャンです。ある曲に、エルトン・ジョンはピアノをひいて、エリック・クラプトンはギター、そして元ビートルズのバンドメンバーのリンゴ・スターがドラムを叩いています。それからエレクトリック・ライト・オーケストラのジェフ・リンはこのアルバムのプロデューサーをつとめ、キーボードやベース、ギターを演じて、バッキング・ボーカリストも担当しました。
二つ目の注目ポイントは「クラウド・ナイン」にはキャッチーな曲が多くあります。僕はこのアルバムを聞くと、数週間あとまで頭の中にいろんな曲のメロディーが残っています。（こういう曲は英語で「earworm」という曲です。ミミズみたいに耳から頭に入ったメロディーがある曲です。）世界中でヒットした「セット・オン・ユー」や、ビートルズ時代へのノスタルジーの「FAB」があります。「FAB」という言葉ははビートルズが呼ばれたニックネーム「Fab Four」です。
コラボレーションが大好きなジョージ・ハリスンがジェフ・リンの影響で「クラウド・ナイン」の後に新しいバンド、トラヴェリング・ウィルベリーズを結成しました。来月のブログはトラヴェリング・ウィルベリーズのファーストアルバムについてです。

George Harrison – ‘Cloud Nine’
As the youngest in the group, George Harrison was arguably the most overlooked of the Beatles. However, in the later part of the group’s time he emerged as an excellent songwriter who was keen to collaborate with others, hence Eric Clapton appearing as a guest on ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. It was these kinds of collaborations that would become a hallmark of Harrison’s solo career.
This album, ‘Cloud Nine’, came five years after Harrison’s previous album and at a time when he seemed to have given up on a solo career, devoting his time to producing films and other projects.
A couple of things shine through for me with this album. One is the list of collaborators: there are guest appearances from Elton John on piano, Eric Clapton on electric guitar, and Ringo Starr on drums. The collaborator who had probably the biggest influence on ‘Cloud Nine’ and the next stage of Harrison’s career is Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra. Lynne produced this album as well as playing bass, guitar, keyboards, and singing backing vocals.
The other thing is that ‘Cloud Nine’ is packed with catchy songs. I find that for weeks after listening to this album, sections of melodies from most of the songs pop into my head. The album features one of Harrison’s biggest international solo hits, ‘Got My Mind Set on You’, which is a cover of a song he first heard 25 years earlier, and a nostalgic piece about his time in the Beatles, ‘When We Was Fab’ – the word “fab” refers to the Beatles’ nickname, “the Fab Four”. ‘Cloud Nine’ is full of earworms, and Harrison was clearly having fun making the album.
With ‘Cloud Nine’, Harrison seemed to find enjoyment in making music again. His long-held eagerness to collaborate fed into the making of the album, and then led his career to take another spectacular turn by forming a new group, the Traveling Wilburys, whose first album will be the topic of next month’s blog.
